Chapter 4 - The Trap Springs Shut

Sybil’s face drained of color so fast she looked like a porcelain doll left out in the rain. She stood up so abruptly her chair tipped backward, crashing onto the carpet with a dull thud.

"Merit?" Sybil gasped, her eyes darting frantically between me and the sheriff's deputies. "What... what are you doing here? How did you get in?"

"I own a credit card, Mother. Hotels let anyone in who can pay," I replied smoothly, stopping two feet away from the mahogany table.

Rowena recovered her composure first, her features twisting into an aggressive snarl. "Security! Get these trespassers out of here! We are in the middle of a private corporate transaction!"

"Actually, Mrs. Rowena Miller, you're in the middle of a federal wire fraud and identity theft investigation," Arthur Vance said smoothly, stepping forward and flipping open his leather briefcase. He pulled out a stack of stamped court documents and slammed them onto the table directly on top of the real estate contract.

Mr. Henderson, the hotel developer, jumped back from the table as if it had burst into flames. "What is this? Is there a cloud on the title?"

"There isn't just a cloud, Mr. Henderson," Vance said, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. "There’s a hurricane. The document Mrs. Miller induced Mr. Arthur Callahan to sign last Tuesday was obtained under false medical pretenses while the victim was experiencing cognitive disorientation. Furthermore, under the Callahan Family Life-Estate Trust executed legally in twenty-twenty-two, this land is entirely unalienable. It cannot be sold, assigned, or transferred without Miss Merit Callahan's direct counter-signature."

Henderson’s face went white. He looked from Vance to Rowena, then back to the contract. "You told me the title was clean! You told me there were no encumbrances!"

"She lied to you," I said, stepping closer to the table and looking directly into my mother's terrified eyes. "Just like she lied about my birthday. Just like she lied about my science fair ribbon when I was twelve. Just like she lied to Grandpa to steal his signature."

Sybil’s hands began to shake violently. She grabbed the edge of the table for support, her voice rising into a shrill, defensive shriek. "We are your parents! We raised you! You owe us everything! You're destroying your own family over a pile of rotting wood and mud!"

"You are not my family," I said, each word falling like an ice cube into a glass. "You are parasites. And the party is over."

Arthur Vance nodded to the deputies.

"Rowena Miller," the lead deputy said, stepping forward and pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for felony wire fraud, elder exploitation, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."

Rowena shrieked, backing away until she hit the wall. "No! You can't do this! Sybil, do something!"

Sybil looked at Alden, but my father was staring fixedly at the floor, his shoulders hunched, utterly defeated. He had known about the scheme. He had stayed silent. That made him just as guilty.

As the deputies snapped the cuffs onto Rowena’s wrists and hauled her out of the room past a cluster of gaping hotel guests, Henderson slammed his briefcase shut, glared at Sybil, and spat, "My lawyers will be suing your entire family into bankruptcy by noon."

Then he stormed out, leaving behind a ruined multi-million-dollar deal and a room smelling of absolute, unmitigated ruin.
