Chapter 7 - The Discovery

By mid-April, the Denver spring had fully arrived. The birch tree outside my office window was bursting with vibrant green leaves, and I had spent my weekends planting hydrangeas along the porch line.

My house was becoming a home. I had furnished the living room with a plush cream sectional, laid down a hand-woven Persian rug in the hallway, and turned the fifth bedroom downstairs into a cozy reading room with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.

Then came the letter from the IRS.

It arrived in an official government envelope addressed to Audrey Miller at my new address.

I opened it at my kitchen island, expecting a routine tax adjustment for my real estate closing costs.

Instead, my eyes widened as I read the bold text across the top:

NOTICE OF AUDIT AND UNREPORTED TAX LIABILITY: TAX YEARS 2022–2024 Dear Taxpayer, our records indicate discrepancies regarding claimed dependents, business loss deductions, and shared property declarations linked to Social Security Number XXX-XX-4891...

I pulled up my personal tax returns from the last three years. I had always used a certified CPA for my filings, and every number was rock-solid.

So why was the IRS flagging my tax ID for $34,000 in fraudulent business deductions and dependent claims?

I immediately called my CPA, David Ross.

"Audrey," David said, his tone unusually grave when he picked up. "I was just about to call you. I pulled the master transcript from the IRS portal after getting a copy of that notice. Someone filed amended secondary returns using your Social Security number last November."

"What?!" I gasped. "Amended returns? I didn't authorize any amendments!"

"I know," David said. "The filing was submitted electronically under an entity called 'Miller Family Trust LLC'. They claimed your income as joint trust revenue, deducted $34,000 in fake 'operational expenses' for a property in Lakewood, and routed a $12,000 tax refund directly into a Chase bank account."

The blood drained from my face.

Lakewood.

My mother’s address.

"David," I said, my voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. "Who is listed as the managing partner of 'Miller Family Trust LLC'?"

"Susan Miller," David read off the screen. "With Brianna Miller listed as the secondary executor."

They hadn't just used my key to steal my rooms. They hadn't just used my pay stubs to apply for apartments.

My mother and Brianna had committed identity theft and federal tax fraud, using my Social Security number to pull fake tax refunds from the government to fund their lives while leaving me with the federal tax liability.

"David," I said, my hands steady, my mind turning to ice. "Send me the complete copy of those amended returns immediately."

"Audrey... this is federal tax fraud," David warned. "If you report this to the IRS Criminal Investigation division, your mother and sister aren't just looking at local deputy sheriffs. They’re looking at federal indictments."

I looked around my quiet, beautiful kitchen. I looked out at the sage green door, at the hydrangeas growing in the soil I had bought with my own honest labor.

"Send me the files, David," I said softly. "They made their choice three years ago when they turned my identity into their personal ATM. Now they get to pay the bill."
