CHAPTER 2 – The Evidence Under Her Skin

The room went silent after Hannah whispered, “They took my phone.”

For a moment, I didn’t move. I couldn’t. My mother stood near the door with that same expression she always wore when she thought she was right—calm, unimpressed, almost bored. Courtney leaned against the wall, arms crossed, like she was watching a performance she already knew the ending to.

“She’s exaggerating,” my mother said flatly. “She’s been emotional since the birth. Some women can’t handle it.”

But I wasn’t looking at her anymore.

I was looking at Hannah.

Her fingers twitched slightly as she tried to reach for Owen. That’s when I saw it—dark bruises around her wrists, faint but unmistakable, like fingerprints burned into her skin.

My stomach tightened.

“What happened to her wrists?” I asked quietly.

My mother answered immediately. “She probably did it to herself. Or she’s being dramatic again—”

A new voice cut through the room.

“Those are restraint marks.”

A doctor had entered without me noticing. He was mid-forties, sharp eyes, holding Hannah’s chart. He moved straight to the bed, gently lifting her wrist for inspection.

“She’s severely dehydrated,” he said. “And postpartum trauma is evident. But these bruises…” He looked up at me. “These are not accidental.”

Courtney scoffed. “Are you serious right now?”

The doctor didn’t look at her. He pressed a button on his phone.

“I need security in this room. And I need to contact law enforcement.”

The air changed instantly.

My mother’s face tightened. “Excuse me? You’re calling the police on me?”

The doctor’s voice stayed calm. “Not a discussion.”

That’s when Owen cried again—weak, hoarse, barely alive sounding.

Something inside me snapped.

I stepped toward the bed and picked him up. His body was burning.

“Hannah,” I said, my voice shaking. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

Tears slid down her face.

“I tried,” she whispered. “They said you wouldn’t believe me.”

May you like

That sentence hit harder than anything else in my life.

Because part of me realized… she was right.
