Chapter 10 - THE BRIGHTEST SUNRISE

Two years later. May 2028.

The Pacific coastline was bathed in a breathtaking, lavender-and-gold sunset.

A small, intimate gathering of forty close friends, family, and military officers stood on the white sandy beach of Coronado Island. The sound of crashing waves provided a soothing, rhythmic melody, while white flower arches bloomed along the sandy aisle.

I stood near the edge of the water wearing an exquisite, flowing lace wedding dress that caught the soft coastal wind.

My skin was glowing, my heart was light, and my soul was completely whole.

Standing beside me, holding my hand with a warm, strong grip, was Captain Caleb Drake—a decorated Navy trauma surgeon who had been part of the medical team that saved my life three years ago at San Diego Naval Medical Center.

Caleb was everything Ryan had never been: kind, humble, fiercely protective, and deeply selfless. Over the past two years, he had loved me with a patience and devotion that healed every remaining scar in my heart.

More importantly, he loved Leo as if he were his own blood.

Three-year-old Leo stood right beside us in a tiny black tuxedo and bow tie, holding a velvet ring pillow, his bright blue eyes beaming with total delight as he looked up at Caleb.

"Daddy Caleb!" Leo whispered loudly, tugging on Caleb’s jacket. "Are we getting married now?"

The entire gathering erupted into warm, soft laughter.

Caleb knelt down on the sand, brushing a lock of dark hair out of Leo’s eyes, his expression full of profound, unconditional love.

"We sure are, buddy," Caleb smiled softly, pulling a tiny silver badge from his pocket and pinning it to Leo’s lapel. "You, your mom, and me. We’re a team forever."

Leo grinned, giving Caleb a big high-five before standing tall and proud like a little man.

General Sterling stepped forward, taking my hand, his eyes brimming with quiet tears as he handed me over to Caleb.

"Take care of my daughter, Captain," my father said, his voice deep and thick with emotion.

"With my life, General," Caleb swore softly, looking into my eyes.

The justice of the peace stepped forward under the flower arch, smiling warmly at us.

"We are gathered here today," the officiant spoke over the sound of the ocean waves, "to celebrate a love that was forged through resilience, proven through fire, and blessed with unmatched strength."

Caleb took both of my hands in his, looking straight into my eyes as he spoke his vows.

"Claire," Caleb said, his voice steady and true. "I promise to honor you, to stand as your shield, to walk beside you in every storm, and to bring sunshine into your life every single day. I vow to love Leo with everything I have, to guide him, and to show him what a real father looks like."

Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness slipped down my cheeks as I smiled up at him.

"Caleb," I choked out softly, my voice filled with complete, unshakeable peace. "Three years ago, I thought my life was over on a cold floor. But you showed me that endings are just beginnings in disguise. I give you my heart, my trust, and my whole life... forever."

"I now pronounce you husband and wife!" the officiant declared proudly. "You may kiss the bride!"

Caleb pulled me into his arms, dipping me gently as he kissed me deeply beneath the golden sunset, while the crowd burst into wild applause, cheers, and happy tears.

My father stood beside Admiral Vance, clapping proudly, while Leo jumped up and down on the sand, cheering, "YAY! MOMMY AND DADDY!"

I pulled back from the kiss, resting my forehead against Caleb’s, listening to the roaring waves and the laughter of the people who truly loved us.

The darkness was gone. The monsters were defeated.
