Chapter 10 - What Love Looks Like

The sun began to set over the river valley, casting long, breathtaking strokes of amber, pink, and molten gold across the green hills surrounding our home.

The visitors had gone home, the evening air had cooled to a soft, comfortable breeze, and the stars were beginning to appear one by one in the vast, clear sky above.

Emma and I sat together on the wooden porch swing, wrapped in a cozy knitted blanket. The puppy was sleeping peacefully at our feet, his soft paws twitching in his sleep.

Emma held a small, freshly baked chocolate chip cookie in her hand—warm, soft, and sweet.

She took a small bite, then looked up at me with those wide, clear brown eyes that carried zero shadows, zero fear, and zero doubt.

"Mommy?" she asked softly.

"Yes, my sweet girl?"

"Is this our home forever?"

I pulled her small, warm body tightly against my side, resting my chin against the top of her dark, silky hair, feeling the steady, strong rhythm of her breathing against my ribs.

I looked out over the three acres of green land, the sunlit garden, the bright, welcoming house with its doors wide open to the summer night, and the peaceful world we had built with our own hands.

"Yes, Emma," I whispered, pressing a long, soft kiss against her forehead. "This is our home forever. Nobody is ever going to close a door on you again."

Emma smiled, snuggled deeper into my lap, and took another bite of her warm cookie.

Three years ago, I had believed that love looked like sending thirty-five thousand dollars a month to people who didn't care if my child froze in the dark. I had believed that love was keeping quiet, paying the bills, and enduring cruelty to keep a broken peace.

Now, sitting on this porch beneath the quiet stars, holding my healthy, happy daughter in my arms, I finally knew the truth.

Love wasn't silence. Love wasn't surrender.

May you like

Love was the strength to tear down every wall that threatened your child, the courage to walk away from golden lies, and the power to build a table where everyone gets to feast in the light.

And as the night settled over the green hill, quiet, safe, and completely whole, I closed my eyes and breathed in the sweet, clean air of our freedom.
