Chapter 3 - The Notice to Quit

The rain seemed to slow down, turning into a fine, misty spray that caught the glare of the SUV headlights. For a long moment, the only sound in the courtyard was the heavy ticking of the idling engines and the ragged, shallow breathing of Adrian Hawthorne.

"No," Adrian whispered, shaking his head in sheer denial. He looked from Marcus to my father, and finally to me, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and disbelief. "No, that’s... that’s impossible! My mother said we owned this place! My grandfather built the foundation!"

"Your grandfather built a house on land he could never afford to buy outright," my father corrected him coldly. He looked down at me, his expression softening instantly as he pulled the cashmere coat tighter around my shoulders. "Are you alright, sweetie?"

"I’m cold, Dad," I murmured, resting my head against his shoulder. "And tired."

"Let's take you home," my father said softly, his voice full of warmth. He turned his cold, piercing gaze back to the trio frozen on the steps. "Marcus. Serve them."

"Right away, Mr. Vale," Marcus replied crisply.

He stepped forward, holding out a single sheet of heavy cream-colored paper toward Eleanor, who stood frozen in horror. When she didn't move, Marcus dropped the paper squarely onto her chest, letting it slide down to the wet marble steps.

"Notice to Quit and Immediate Vacate Order," Marcus announced, his voice echoing off the mansion walls. "You have exactly two hours to remove your personal belongings from the premises. Security personnel will take inventory of every item as it leaves. Any attempt to remove fixtures, art, or property belonging to Vale Consolidated will be treated as grand larceny."

"You can't do this!" Eleanor shrieked, finally breaking her paralytic shock. She lunged forward, her face twisted in pure, venomous rage, pointing a shaking finger at me. "You lying, conniving little snake! You planned this! You crept into our family like a beggar just to steal everything we built!"

I looked at her—at the woman who had spat in my face not twenty minutes ago—and felt nothing. No anger, no pain, just the cold, crystal clarity of justice.

"I didn't steal anything, Eleanor," I said quietly, my voice carrying effortlessly over the hum of the engines. "I simply stopped hiding who I am. You spent three years reminding me that I didn't belong in your family. You were right. I belong to something much larger than a decaying name and a rented mansion."

"Adrian! Do something!" Eleanor screamed, grabbing her son by the shoulders and shaking him. "Tell them! Tell them this is our house!"

Adrian looked completely broken. The arrogant corporate heir, the man who had casually tossed my maternity clothes into the mud and laughed while his mistress smiled, was now staring at his hands as if he didn't recognize them.

"It's over, Mom," Adrian muttered, his voice hollow. "They... they own everything. The bank accounts, the company credit lines, the estate... it’s all tied to Vale."

Vanessa, who had been hiding silently behind Adrian the entire time, suddenly stepped forward, her silk robe soaked through. Her face was flushed with panic. "Adrian, what are you talking about? We have our penthouse in the city, right? We have your savings!"

Adrian turned to look at her, a bitter, hysterical laugh escaping his lips. "Savings? Vanessa, every cent of liquid cash I had was funneled into the Hawthorne expansion project—the exact project that Vale Consolidated just foreclosed on. Our penthouse? It’s leased under the company corporate account. Which was just frozen."

Vanessa’s face drained of all color. She stepped back, looking at Adrian as if he were a stranger. "You... you told me you were a multi-millionaire! You said you ran this family!"

"I thought I did," Adrian whispered, staring at the ground.

My father looked down at Adrian one last time, his expression one of supreme indifference. "You had a good woman who asked for nothing, Adrian. You had loyalty, patience, and love. You traded them for arrogance and a mistress. Enjoy the rain."

My father turned me gently toward the lead SUV, shielding me from the chill wind. The rear door opened smoothly, revealing a warm, leather-lined interior filled with soft lighting and absolute comfort.

As I stepped inside, I looked back one last time.

The great iron doors of the Hawthorne estate were swinging wide open, locked under the control of my father’s security detail. Adrian, Vanessa, and Eleanor stood stranded on their marble steps, surrounded by a pile of wet designer luggage and cheap plastic bags, staring into the darkness as the black convoy turned around and smoothly drove away, leaving them behind in the storm.
