Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary

Ten miles away, high above the bustling streets of downtown Seattle, the top three floors of the Grand Horizon Hotel were bathed in soft, warm light.
The Grand Horizon wasn't just any luxury hotel; it was the crown jewel of the Vance Hospitality Group—another asset completely owned by Elle's family trust.
Inside the sprawling penthouse suite, the air smelled faintly of lavender and fresh chamomile tea. Soft classical music played from hidden speakers.
Elle sat on a plush cream-colored sofa, holding four-month-old Clara against her chest, gently burping her after a feeding. Nearby, in a custom wooden bassinet, Violet slept peacefully, a tiny pink blanket wrapped snugly around her shoulders.
Sitting across from Elle was Maya, her closest childhood friend and the head of global operations for the Vance Trust. Maya handed Elle a steaming cup of tea.
"Forensic accounting just finished the first pass on Ryan's executive accounts," Maya said softly, sitting back. "He spent sixty thousand dollars last month alone on private dining, charter jets, and luxury gifts."
Elle didn't look surprised. "And Violet from Marketing?"
"Violet Vance—no relation to your family, thankfully—was on his personal 'consulting' payroll for fifteen thousand a month," Maya replied, disgust evident in her voice. "She was charging designer clothes to the subsidiary marketing budget. We fired her at noon today."
Elle took a slow sip of her tea. Her face remained composed, but deep in her brown eyes, a soft flicker of sadness remained.
She hadn't stripped Ryan of his life out of spite. She had done it because she had finally realized that her silence and modesty had turned her into an accomplice to her own destruction. For five years, she had shrunk herself so that Ryan could feel big. She had hidden her brilliance, her wealth, and her heritage so he wouldn't feel threatened.
And in return, he had treated her like an inconvenient servant.
"How are you feeling, Elle?" Maya asked gently, reaching across the table to squeeze her hand. "Really?"
Elle looked down at Clara's tiny hand resting against her collarbone. The baby let out a soft, contented sigh in her sleep.
"I feel like I can finally breathe," Elle whispered. "For months, I thought I was losing my mind. Every time I asked him for help with the babies, every time I said I was tired, he made me feel like I was weak. He made me believe that my body's recovery was a personal failure."
She looked up, her gaze hardening into something unbreakable.
"I spent five years building a man," Elle said firmly. "Now, I'm going to spend the rest of my life building my daughters."
A soft chime sounded at the suite's private entrance. Marcus Vance, her legal counsel, walked in holding a tablet.
"Mrs. Vance-Collins," Marcus said respectfully. "Ryan has just checked into a two-star motel near the airport using the last of his personal cash. He has attempted to call twenty-four different board members and high-society contacts. None of them accepted his calls."
"And the media?" Elle asked.
"They are hungry for a statement," Marcus replied. "The public wants to know why the sudden shift in leadership occurred at Vertex."

Elle set her teacup down carefully.
"Call a press conference for tomorrow morning at ten," Elle instructed calmly. "In the main auditorium at Vertex Headquarters. It's time the public meets the real Founder."
