Chapter 9 - The Boardroom Revolt

The corporate headquarters of Harrison Logistics occupied the top floor of a glass skyscraper overlooking the city's old shipping channels. The boardroom was an arena of polished walnut, leather armchairs, and floor-to-ceiling windows that caught the gray light of a rainy Tuesday morning.
Linda sat at the head of the table, her legal team flanked behind her like gargoyles. The seven independent board members sat along the sides, their faces uncomfortable, their fingers flipping through the financial reports her lawyers had prepared.
"The data is incontrovertible, gentlemen," Henderson, Linda’s attorney, was saying. "Michael Harrison has been absent from his duties for over forty days without a formal medical leave of absence on file. The corporate charter is clear: prolonged absence without prior board authorization constitutes a forfeiture of executive benefits, including the specialized medical trust fund."
"The absence wasn't a choice, Henderson," a voice boomed from the doorway.
The heavy glass doors swung open, and Matteo stepped into the room. He wasn't wearing his leather jacket; he was wearing his father’s old wool suit, his hair brushed back, a leather briefcase held firmly in his hand.
Linda’s eyes narrowed. "Matteo, this is a private board session. You have no standing to interrupt."
"I own thirty percent of this company, Mother," Matteo said, walking straight to the empty chair opposite her and dropping his briefcase onto the table with a loud, echoic thud. "And I have a proxy vote from the man who owns another thirty."
He opened the briefcase, pulling out a legal document signed by Michael forty-eight hours ago from his hospital bed, witnessed by Sarah Vance and Dr. Evans.
"Michael hasn't resigned," Matteo announced, leaning over the table, his eyes locking onto his mother’s face. "He has formally transferred his executive voting rights and his operational control to me during his medical leave. And my first act as the acting majority shareholder is to present a motion for a forensic audit of the corporate accounts."
The independent board members stirred, a murmur of surprise rippling through the room.
"An audit?" Linda scoffed, her voice losing its composure for a fraction of a second. "On what grounds?"
"On the grounds that for the past six months, sixty thousand dollars a month has been diverted from the Harrison Charitable Foundation into a private offshore account registered under your name, Linda," Matteo said, throwing a secondary stack of financial logs onto the center of the walnut table. "You told Michael you were paying for his experimental treatments out of your own pocket. You told him he owed you his life. But you weren't using your money, Mother. You were stealing from our father’s foundation, laundering it through a shell company, and using it as a leash to force your dying son to sign away his wife’s rights."
Linda went entirely still. The board members scrambled for the documents, their faces turning to expressions of pure shock as the financial trail became visible.

"This meeting is adjourned," the lead independent board member said, rising from his chair with immediate panic. "We are calling a federal compliance officer. Mrs. Harrison, you need to step away from that table."
Matteo didn't wait for her to speak. He gathered his files, looked his mother in the eye one last time, and walked out of the room. The leash was broken. The funding was secure. And Linda Harrison was finally out of moves.
