Chapter 5 - The Unearthing

For forty-eight hours, the investigative machinery worked around the clock.
On Friday afternoon, while Daniel was being transported back to Ohio under heavy federal guard, the forensic team executed a search warrant on the abandoned Tippecanoe property.
I remained at the safe house with Lily, trying to maintain a normal routine, making her silver-dollar pancakes and reading her storybooks, while my heart pounded in anticipation of every phone call.
At 4:00 PM, Agent Reed called. His voice was heavy, solemn, and drained of all professional distance.
"Maya," he said softly. "We found her."
I sank into the nearest chair, holding the receiver tight. "Oh God..."
"The forensic team unearthed a shallow grave behind the old property shed," Reed confirmed. "Preliminary DNA matching confirms it is Sarah Whitaker. She was buried with a small bag containing her personal documents, her driver's license, and a silver lockbox containing Lily's baby pictures."
I covered my mouth to muffle a sob. The sheer wickedness of it was staggering. Sarah hadn't abandoned her child. She had died trying to save her. She had been murdered, buried in the woods, and then demonized for four years by the very monster who took her life—used as a psychological whip to starve her daughter into submission.
"The medical examiner found a written journal inside the lockbox that Sarah had hidden," Reed continued, his voice tight. "In it, she documented Daniel’s abuse and wrote a letter to Lily, telling her how much she loved her and that she was fighting to get them away."
"She didn't abandon her," I wept silently. "She loved her."
"She loved her deeply," Reed said. "And now, thanks to you, Sarah is going to get justice, and Lily is finally going to know the truth."
That evening, the local and national news broke the story. Prominent Corporate Executive Arrested for Cold Case Murder of Ex-Wife and Felony Child Starvation.

Daniel’s mugshot was displayed across every major network—his arrogant, handsome facade completely shattered, replaced by a vacant, desperate glare. The charges stacked against him were insurmountable: First-Degree Premeditated Homicide, Tampering with Evidence, Kidnapping, Criminal Child Abuse, and Coercive Extortion.
He was held without bail in the county jail, facing life in prison without the possibility of parole, or the death penalty.
