Chapter 5 - The Fall of Natalie Reed

Exile from Belle Meade was only the beginning of Natalie Reed’s nightmare.
Deprived of Grant’s financial support and cut off by her wealthy father, Natalie was forced to move into a rented two-bedroom townhouse on the eastern side of Nashville. Grant, stripped of his executive salary and facing mounting legal fees, moved into the guest room of that same townhouse—not out of love, but out of sheer financial survival.
The grand "miracle romance" that had destroyed my marriage collapsed into an ugly war of attrition within forty-eight hours.
One rainy afternoon in late October, Natalie sat at a cluttered kitchen table, staring at a stack of legal documents served by her ex-husband, Daniel Reed.
Daniel was not a weak man. He was a wealthy Texas oil heir who had endured six months of public humiliation while Natalie claimed her baby was a "solo miracle." Once the forensic paternity tests were released confirming Daniel was indeed the biological father, Daniel filed for sole physical and legal custody.
"Grant!" Natalie screamed toward the living room, where Grant sat on a worn sofa staring blankly at a television that wasn't turned on. "Grant, get in here! Daniel’s lawyer just filed an emergency motion! They're claiming I'm an unfit mother because of the fraud investigation!"
Grant didn't move. He looked like a ghost of his former self. He was wearing an old sweatshirt, his beard overgrown, a half-empty bottle of cheap bourbon sitting on the floor beside his feet.
"Call your father, Natalie," Grant said, his voice flat and dead.
"My father won't answer my calls!" Natalie yelled, throwing a coffee mug against the kitchen wall. It shattered into pieces, hot liquid staining the wallpaper. "He blamed me for losing his investment in Whitmore Crown! He said I ruined this family!"
She ran into the living room, grabbing Grant by the collar of his sweatshirt and shaking him violently.
"You promised me!" she shrieked. "You promised me that if I left Daniel and came to Nashville, you would make me the queen of Whitmore Crown! You said Claire was a boring pushover who would accept a quiet divorce settlement! You promised me everything!"
Grant slowly turned his head to look at her. His eyes were cold, filled with a deep, consuming self-loathing.
"Claire was the best thing that ever happened to me," Grant said, his voice quiet and terrifyingly hollow. "She built my company. She built my life. She loved me when I had nothing. And I threw her away for a selfish, manipulative leech who couldn't even raise her own child without a press team."
Natalie’s breath hitched. "What did you call me?"
"You heard me," Grant said, standing up and shoving her away so hard she stumbled onto the couch. "You never loved me, Natalie. You just wanted a handsome doctor on your arm to spite Daniel. You used me. And I was stupid enough to let you ruin my life."
Before Natalie could respond, a sharp knock echoed through the front door.
Natalie wiped her tears, marching over and yanking the door open. "What?!"
Two uniformed officers from the Davidson County Sheriff's Department stood on the porch, accompanied by Daniel Reed and his team of attorneys.
"Natalie Reed," the lead officer said, holding a court order. "We are executing an emergency custody transfer order issued by the 2nd Circuit Family Court. You are ordered to surrender the minor child, Liam Reed, to his father immediately."
Natalie’s face went deadly white. "No! No! You can't take my baby! Grant, help me!"
Daniel Reed stepped forward, his face hard as iron. He looked past Natalie at Grant, who didn't even bother to stand up from the sofa.
"It's over, Natalie," Daniel said coldly. "The court reviewed the security footage from Whitmore Crown. They saw how you used this infant as a prop for a publicity stunt while a woman was bleeding to death in the next room. The judge declared you mentally unstable and a flight risk."
Two female officers stepped past Natalie into the nursery. Seconds later, they walked out carrying the baby, wrapped in a blanket.
"Liam! My baby!" Natalie screamed, throwing herself toward the officers, but a deputy caught her arms, holding her back.
She watched in absolute horror as Daniel took his son into his arms, kissed his forehead, and walked down the driveway into a waiting black limousine.

The limousine pulled away into the rain, taking the only bargaining chip Natalie had left.
Natalie fell to her knees on the wet porch, howling into the storm, while inside the dark house, Grant Whitmore poured himself another glass of bourbon and closed his eyes, praying for the nightmare to end.
