Chapter 9 - The Letter

A month after the birthday party, a thick white envelope arrived in Emily’s mailbox.
It bore the return address of the Western Illinois Correctional Facility.
Emily sat at her sunroom desk, the soft sound of ocean waves drifting through the open window. She looked at the envelope for a long moment, then opened it with a silver letter opener.
Inside was a single sheet of lined paper, covered in Travis’s neat handwriting.
Emily,
I am writing this letter as part of my mandatory rehabilitation program, though my counselor told me you are under no obligation to read it.
I spend twenty-two hours a day in a small concrete cell. I have a lot of time to think. I watch the rain outside my narrow window, and every time it cold-rains, I think about that Sunday night.
I see the video in my head every single day. I see myself shoving you into the storm. I hear my mother laughing. I hear what I said to the camera.
I realized something in here, Emily. You weren't the coward. I was. My father built his whole life on pride, and my mother built hers on cruelty, and I was too weak to ever stand up to them. I sacrificed my own wife and daughter because I was terrified of disappointing my parents.
I lost my license. I lost my career. My father lost his firm. We destroyed ourselves because we thought we were above the rules.
I know I surrendered my rights, and I know I will never see Josie again. I don't ask for your forgiveness—I don't deserve it. I just want you to know that for the first time in my life, I see the truth.
I hope she grows up knowing how brave her mother was on the night the blizzard hit.
Travis.
Emily read the letter twice.
She felt no surge of triumph, no lingering sting of pain. The words were simply the quiet, delayed echo of a storm that had long since cleared.

She slowly folded the paper in half, walked over to the stone fireplace in the living room, and dropped it into the small, flickering fire.
She watched the white paper turn into gray ash, rising up the chimney and disappearing into the clear blue sky above the ocean.
