Chapter 4 - The Motel of Broken Pride

The hotel was called El Greco, a faded, two-star concrete block located off the highway near the northern exit of the city. It smelled of damp carpets and cheap lemon disinfectant—a universe away from the marble floors and private security of the Polanco apartment.

Inside room 114, Doña Teresa sat on the edge of a queen-sized bed covered in a polyester floral bedspread. Her designer luggage was stacked haphazardly against the wall, one of the zippers broken from the rush of the eviction. Ximena lay on the secondary bed, her face red from crying, her phone plugged into a wall outlet that was missing its plastic cover.

"Mauricio, do something!" Teresa screamed as her son walked back into the room holding a plastic bag containing white bread and instant coffee. "My back is killing me from this mattress! The water in the shower is completely cold! I am a lady! I cannot live like this!"

"With what money, Mom?" Mauricio snapped, his voice rough and broken. He dropped the bag onto the laminate table. "I went to three different ATMs on Calzada de Guadalupe. Every single one of my personal debit cards flashed 'Account Frozen by Order of the Authority.' I tried to use the credit line to check us into the Fiesta Americana, and the manager told me the card was reported stolen by the primary owner."

"Call your father!" Teresa cried. "He has his savings! He has the money from the cattle ranch in Veracruz!"

"Dad is at the Public Ministry in Miguel Hidalgo," Mauricio said, sitting on a plastic chair and burying his face in his hands. "His lawyers told him that if he doesn't post a five-hundred-thousand-peso bail for the assault charge from Christmas Eve, he’ll be transferred to the Reclusorio Norte by tomorrow morning. And they won't accept a transfer from his regular accounts—the system won't let the funds clear."

Ximena sat up, her eyes wide with panic. "Mauricio, my Instagram... people are commenting on my last story. They’re asking why Valeria posted a picture of a police truck outside the building. Someone named 'Anónimos_Polanco' uploaded a copy of the domestic violence report with our names visible! I’m losing sponsors every ten minutes! My contract with the activewear brand was canceled an hour ago!"

"Tell them it’s a lie!" Teresa said, her hands shaking as she reached for her purse. "Tell them Valeria is crazy! She’s a jealous, working-class girl who doesn't understand family values!"

"Nobody cares about family values on the internet, Mom," Mauricio said, looking at his reflection in the stained mirror above the desk. He looked old. The expensive cologne had faded, replaced by the sour smell of stress sweat and cheap hotel soap. "Valeria isn't playing around. She’s not waiting for me to call her. She’s systematically deleting us from her life."

The door to the room rattled with a heavy, rhythmic knock.

Mauricio jumped, his heart skipping a beat. He walked over and pulled the door open, expecting to see his father’s attorney with the bail documents.

Instead, two men in dark gray suits with federal badges pinned to their lapels stood in the concrete breezeway. Behind them, two armed officers from the Fiscal Police stood with their rifles angled toward the floor.

"Mauricio Sterling Robles?" the lead agent asked, holding up a laminated document bearing the seal of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).

"Yes?" Mauricio whispered, stepping back.

"You are under arrest pursuant to an emergency warrant issued by the Federal Fiscal Court," the agent announced, stepping into the room and grabbing Mauricio’s wrist with a practiced, steel grip. "You are charged with fiscal fraud, simulation of operations, and asset laundering under the Federal Law against Organized Crime. Step outside, sir."

"Mom!" Mauricio shrieked as the steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists, the heavy sound bouncing off the cheap concrete walls of the room. "Mom, call Alejandro! Tell him to fix it!"

But Doña Teresa couldn't call anyone. She stood by the bed, her face turning an ugly, gray shade of white, as she watched her perfect, golden son being dragged down the concrete stairs of a two-star motel, his shoes slipping on the gravel as the federal pickup door slammed shut.
