Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in Cook County

The Cook County Detention Center was a grim, gray concrete fortress that stood in stark contrast to the luxury high-rises Nathan Mercer had spent his life trying to build. On Wednesday afternoon, I walked through the heavy steel security doors, wearing a tailored cream-colored trench coat, my hair styled perfectly, my face clear and calm.

I sat behind the thick glass partition in the visitor's room. A minute later, the heavy door on the other side opened, and Nathan was led in by two guards.

The transformation was staggering. The charcoal-gray sport coat was gone, replaced by a coarse, oversized green jumpsuit. His hair was unwashed, his face was covered in a rough, uneven stubble, and his eyes were bloodshot with a desperate, feral terror. He slammed his hands against the glass, his voice muffled until he snatched up the black plastic intercom phone.

"Cassandra! You have to stop this!" he screamed into the receiver, his voice cracking with emotion. "Mom is in the hospital infirmary! They arrested Brooke this morning at the motel! Elena... Elena left the city, she took a deal with the prosecutors and turned over all my personal texts! They are saying I’m facing twenty years!"

I picked up my phone, holding it gently to my ear. "Hello, Nathan."

"Why are you doing this to me?" he wept, his forehead pressing against the glass. "Ten years, Cassandra! We built that company together! You said you loved me! You said you’d always have my back!"

"I did have your back, Nathan," I said, my voice completely level, completely devoid of the anger he was expecting. "I had your back when you forgot to pay your corporate taxes in year three. I had your back when your sister blew through her boutique’s credit line and I quietly cleared her debt so she wouldn't go to jail. I had your back every single time you came home stressed, telling me the market was tough, while I secretly injected millions from my grandfather's trust to keep your projects afloat."

Nathan’s jaw slackened. His eyes widened as the realization finally began to penetrate his panic. "What... what do you mean? You... you didn't have that kind of money. Your family... your dad was a public school teacher."

"My father was a teacher because he loved to teach, Nathan," I explained softly, as if instructing a child. "My maternal grandfather was Arthur Holloway. He owned forty percent of the shipping lanes in the Great Lakes. I didn't tell you because I wanted to marry a man who loved me for my mind, not my ledger. And for ten years, I thought I had found him."

Nathan stumbled back a step in his chair, the phone slipping slightly from his hand. "Holloway... Aegis Holdings... that was you? The institutional investor... the one who approved every single one of my land acquisitions..."

"Yes," I said. "Every success you ever had, every award you ever won, every piece of praise you received in the Chicago Business Journal—it was all an ecosystem I created to keep you happy. Because I loved you. Because I thought we were a team."

"Cassandra, please..." Nathan cried, slamming the phone back against his ear, his face contorted in an agony of sudden, absolute regret. "I made a mistake! Elena... she was nothing! She was just a distraction! I was stressed about the Riverfront project! Please, talk to Gerald. Tell him to withdraw the injunction. We can go back to how it was. I’ll do whatever you want. I’ll pack my bags, we can move away from my mother—"

"You still don't understand, Nathan," I cut him off, my voice dropping into a freezing, definitive whisper. "You didn't just make a mistake with another woman. You stood at that airport terminal, held her hand, called me 'baby' on the phone, and watched your family plan to take my home, my office, and my life away from me. You looked at me and saw a floor. You thought you could stomp on me forever and I’d never move."

I stood up from the chair, buttoning my coat with one hand.

May you like

"The floor is gone, Nathan. Enjoy the fall."

I hung up the phone, turning my back on his screams as he pounded against the glass until the guards dragged him back into the shadows of the prison corridor.
