Chapter 6 - The Fall of Adrian Morgan

The fall of a powerful man is rarely a slow, gentle process; it is usually an explosive, catastrophic demolition.

Over the next four weeks, the dominoes fell with breathtaking speed. With the forensic audit complete, the United States Department of Justice formally stepped in. The state-level assault and harassment charges were combined with federal indictments for wire fraud, money laundering, corporate embezzlement, and tax evasion.

Adrian’s legal team tried everything. They tried to claim he was mentally unfit; the court-appointed psychiatrist found him completely coherent, albeit suffering from extreme narcissistic rage. They tried to offer a plea deal where he would forfeit his assets in exchange for probation; Prosecutor Hayes laughed them out of the room.

Because Adrian’s personal assets had been frozen, he couldn't pay his high-priced corporate defense attorneys. Within three weeks, his elite legal team withdrew from the case due to non-payment, leaving him with a public defender who had thirty other cases on his desk.

On a cold Tuesday morning in late October, the emergency shareholders' meeting of Morgan & Partners Consulting was held at the federal courthouse.

Adrian was brought into the room wearing an orange jumpsuit, his hands handcuffed at his waist, his ankles shackled. His once-immaculate hair was unkempt, his face pale and sunken. The arrogant shine in his eyes had been replaced by a wild, desperate twitch.

I sat at the head of the conference table, surrounded by my legal team, corporate advisors, and the remaining board members.

"This meeting is called to order," Eleanor announced. "The primary item on the agenda is the removal of Adrian Morgan as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, pursuant to Section 8 of the Corporate Governance bylaws regarding felony criminal indictment."

"Rachel..." Adrian croaked, his voice raw. He leaned across the table, his handcuffs clanking loudly against the wood. "Rachel, please. Look at me. We were a team. We built this together. I made mistakes... I know I did! I was under so much pressure... the business, the investors... I snapped! You know I love you!"

I looked at him across the table. For six years, this man’s voice had controlled my heart rate, my breath, my every waking thought. I used to tremble when he raised his voice. I used to apologize for things I had never done just to keep his fists from flying.

Now, looking at him in that ridiculous orange jumpsuit, smelling the stale sweat of a holding cell on him, I felt... nothing. No rage. No hatred. Just a vast, cold emptiness.

"You didn't snap, Adrian," I said, my voice echoing clearly in the quiet room. "You calculated. Every hit, every insult, every stolen dollar was a choice you made because you thought you were too smart to ever be held accountable. You thought I was too weak to ever fight back."

"I can change!" he pleaded, tears actually filling his eyes—though I knew they were tears of self-pity, not remorse. "We can sell the company together! We can take the money and start over somewhere else! Please, Rachel, don't do this to me!"

"The board will now vote on Resolution 1-A," Eleanor declared, ignoring his pathetic groveling. "The immediate termination of Adrian Morgan for cause, and the full cancellation of his fifty-two percent equity stake to satisfy corporate liabilities and restitution."

"All in favor?" Eleanor asked.

Every single hand at the table went up—including mine, holding thirty-eight percent of the voting power.

"The motion passes unanimously," Eleanor stated, signing the document and stamping it with the official corporate seal. "Adrian Morgan is officially removed from all executive positions within Morgan & Partners."

"No! You can't do this!" Adrian screamed, trying to stand up, but the federal marshals instantly seized his shoulders and slammed him back down into his chair. "You stole my company! You stole my life, you bitch! I'll kill you! I swear to God I'll kill you!"

I picked up my pen, leaned over the final document on the table, and calmly signed my name across the line designated for the new Managing Partner & Chief Executive Officer.

"Take him away," Prosecutor Hayes ordered the marshals.

As Adrian was dragged down the hallway, kicking and screaming obscenities until his voice faded into the distance, I put the cap back on my pen.

I looked at the board members, who were all sitting in stunned silence.

"Alright, ladies and gentlemen," I said, leaning back in my chair with absolute authority. "Let's talk about rebranding."
