Chapter 6 - The Public surrender

Daniel looked between his mother and me, catching the sudden shift in atmosphere, though he hadn't fully caught my rapid French whispered sentence.

"Mom? Is everything okay?" Daniel asked, brow furrowed. "You look like you've seen a ghost."

Margot’s lips parted, but no sound came out. She looked at Étienne, who was staring at me with horror, realizing that the entire time his wife had been plotting in French at Maison Arden, I had been recording every single word.

If those audio files were released to the press or the pension oversight board, the scandal would destroy their firm, render them social pariahs in Manhattan and Paris, and trigger a cascading series of financial lawsuits that would liquidate their assets.

They were completely, totally cornered.

"I... I am fine, Daniel," Margot stammered, her voice shaking violently as she pulled her shawl tight around her trembling shoulders. "I just... I realized how blessed we are to welcome Claire into our family."

"Really?" Daniel blinked, genuinely stunned by his mother's sudden emotional display.

"Yes," Étienne chimed in rapidly, pulling a crystal glass from a passing waiter's tray and tapping it with a silver spoon to gain the room's attention. "In fact, I would like to make a toast!"

The room fell quiet. Three hundred high-society guests turned toward the head table.

Étienne stood beside me, his hand trembling as he raised his glass. He looked like a man standing before a firing squad, but he knew he had only one script left to follow if he wanted to save his firm.

"Friends, colleagues, distinguished guests," Étienne began, his voice echoing through the acoustics of The Plaza ballroom. "Tonight, as we celebrate the success of Duvall & Moreau, I want to take a moment to honor two very special people. My son, Daniel... and his extraordinary fiancée, Captain Claire Vance."

The room applauded politely.

Étienne turned to me, forcing a deep, respectful bow. "Claire serves our nation with distinction, courage, and unmatched intellect. She brings to our family a level of honor and discipline that we deeply admire. Margot and I could not be prouder to welcome Captain Vance into the Duvall family. To Daniel and Claire!"

The room erupted into loud, genuine applause. Several retired military officers in attendance stood up to salute.

Daniel beamed with pride, wrapping his arm around my waist and kissing my temple. "See?" he whispered, his eyes shining. "I told you she’d come around. She just needed to see who you really are."

May you like

I looked over Daniel's shoulder at Margot, who was forcing herself to applaud, tears of absolute humiliation and defeat brimming in her eyes.

"Yes, honey," I whispered back to Daniel, resting my head on his shoulder. "She sees me now."
