Chapter 6 - The Prelude to War

The night before the wedding, I stayed at the Ritz-Carlton suite overlooking Boston Common, far away from Grant, my parents, and Celeste.

Paige and Lucas sat on the velvet sofa, surrounded by takeout boxes and printed files. Marcus Vance stood by the window, reviewing a final legal dossier.

"The board of managing partners at Vanguard Apex Capital received an anonymous package two hours ago," Marcus reported, turning to face the room. "It contained full documentation of Grant’s illegal margin transfers, his front-running activities, and his attempt to use Avery’s mirror account as secondary collateral."

"How did they react?" I asked, sipping a cup of chamomile tea.

"Panicked," Marcus grinned coldly. "They held an emergency executive session at nine o'clock tonight. They’ve already drafted his termination notice and contacted the Securities and Exchange Commission. They’re sending two internal compliance officers and a legal representative to the reception tomorrow night to execute a formal notice of corporate seizure."

"Brilliant," I said. "And the local authorities?"

"The Boston Police Financial Crimes Unit, along with an investigator from the District Attorney's office, will be present in the hotel lobby," Lucas added. "They have an arrest warrant for Celeste Rowan for grand larceny, credit card fraud, and identity theft, effective at eight-thirty PM."

Paige leaned forward, looking at me with admiration and faint apprehension. "Avery... what about Mom and Dad?"

I looked out the window at the city lights below. "What about them?"

"They called me three times tonight," Paige said quietly. "Dad is frantic. He knows something is terribly wrong. He said Grant stopped answering his calls, and the bank froze his municipal bond accounts due to a suspicious activity flag."

"I set that flag," I revealed calmly. "Father attempted to liquidate his remaining trust equity to pay off his country club dues before the wedding guests arrived tomorrow. I exercised my legal right as the primary guarantor of the Bennett Family Trust to freeze all outbound wires pending a full judicial accounting."

Paige let out a long breath. "You're completely stripping them."

"They stripped themselves when they put a price tag on their daughter," I said, setting my tea down. "They spent thirty years teaching me that appearances are everything. Tomorrow, I am going to give them an appearance they will never forget."

My phone chimed on the table. It was a notification from my firm’s automated security network.

Grant’s digital credentials had just attempted to access the mirror account for the fourth time in two hours. The access log showed three failed biometric attempts and a system warning: Account Restricted — On-Site Authentication Required at Destination Terminal.

He was desperate. He was realizing that the trap was closing, but his arrogance and greed were keeping him pinned to the board. He couldn't flee the city without the money, and he couldn't get the money without standing beside me at the altar.

He was trapped in the illusion he had built.

I stood up and walked toward the bedroom, where my wedding dress hung inside a protective garment bag.

I unzipped the top of the bag and pulled back the fabric, looking at the exquisite, handcrafted silk gown. It was a masterpiece of design—pure, pristine, and perfectly structured.

I reached into my pocket, pulled out a small black permanent marker, and unsealed it.

Without hesitation, I reached inside the dress lining—deep near the inner seam where no one would ever see it unless they tore the garment apart—and wrote a single sentence on the heavy white silk:

The truth is a fire that burns only what is fake.

I capped the marker, zipped the bag shut, and looked at my reflection in the mirror.

Tomorrow, the fairytale would end. And the execution would begin.
