Chapter 3 - Unearthing the Snakes

By seven o'clock the following morning, Ashbourne Manor had been transformed into a forward operating command center. Captain Vance had set up foldable tables in the formal dining room, covered in banker boxes, financial printouts, and laptop computers linked directly to military and civilian legal databases.
My sister-in-law, Victoria Hale—Harrison’s daughter and Daniel’s younger sister—arrived at eight-thirty. She drove up the driveway in her luxury sports car, completely unaware of the events of the previous night. She stormed through the front doors wearing a designer fur coat, demanding to know why there were military vehicles parked on the estate grounds.
"What is the meaning of this circus?" Victoria shrieked, tossing her leather handbag onto the foyer table. "Becky! Where is my father? Why are there soldiers marching through our living room? And why did my credit card get declined at the coffee shop this morning?"
I stepped out of the study, holding a steaming cup of black coffee. I was dressed in a simple tactical sweater, but my posture was pure military command.
"Good morning, Victoria," I said quietly. "Your credit card was declined because it was tied to the corporate account of Hale Agricultural Equipment—an account that has been frozen by federal order due to grand larceny charges."
Victoria laughed nervously, adjusting her sunglasses on top of her head. "Larceny? Have you lost your mind? This is my family's house. You are a guest here. A temporary guest now that Daniel is dead. Dad told me he was kicking you out last night so we could renovate the east wing for my new studio!"
"Your father spent last night in a county holding cell," I replied. "He was arrested for reckless endangerment of six minors and criminal trespass on private property. My property."
Victoria’s face turned pale. "Your property? Don't be ridiculous. This house has been in the Hale family for three generations!"
"And it became my sole property seven years ago when I purchased the entire encumbered mortgage to prevent federal bank seizure," I said, signaling to Vance.
Captain Vance walked over and handed Victoria a thick envelope of legal notices. "Ms. Hale, you are being formally served with a notice of eviction for the carriage house you currently occupy on the west side of the estate. You have forty-eight hours to remove your personal effects. Furthermore, you are named as a co-conspirator in a civil suit regarding the unauthorized drain of Major Daniel Hale's military survivor benefit annuities."
Victoria dropped the legal documents onto the floor as if they were burning her hands. "That money was meant for the family business! Daniel would have wanted us to use it! He loved this family!"
"Daniel loved his children," I snapped, taking a step toward her. The raw intensity in my voice made her flinch backward. "Daniel worked eighteen-hour days so his children would have a future. While he was deployed overseas, you and your father drained his secondary trust fund to pay for your luxury vacations, your failed boutiques, and your father's country club memberships. You treated my husband like a personal ATM machine because he was too honorable to see the snakes slithering in his own home."
"You can't prove any of that!" Victoria hissed, her voice trembling with rising panic.
"We already have," Vance interrupted, pointing to a series of forensic bank statements on the dining table. "We tracked twelve separate wire transfers totaling four hundred and twenty thousand dollars, initiated from your IP address using Major Hale’s forged signature while he was deployed in Jordan two years ago. The Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division has already opened a formal case file."

Victoria backed toward the front door, her arrogance completely crumbling into sheer terror. "You... you were just an army wife... You were supposed to just go away..."
"I am a Colonel in the United States Army, Victoria," I said, watching her squeeze through the doorway. "And you have forty-seven hours and fifty minutes to clear out your possessions before my military police details pack them into trash bags and drop them at the county dump."
