Chapter 10 - The Table We Build

The afternoon sun of early summer poured through the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows of my Chicago penthouse, casting long, golden geometric shapes across the hardwood floors.

The penthouse was no longer just an impressive, pristine real estate asset from a magazine spread. It was a home.

Soft, cream-colored rugs covered the floors. Framed photographs from the Brooks Community Foundation events lined the hallway walls. The air smelled of roasting garlic, fresh basil, and sweet peach cobbler baking in the oven.

In the dining room, sitting beside the floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the river, stood a custom-built, twelve-foot white oak dining table that I had commissioned from a local female artisan in Pilsen.

Around the table, seats were being filled.

Claire was sitting near the head of the table, laughing as Marcus Vance tried to explain the complexities of his daughter's middle-school soccer strategy. Near the center sat Maya—my first scholarship recipient—who had just accepted a full-time position as a junior analyst at Northstar, talking excitedly with two of our senior project managers about a new housing development project in Englewood.

There were twelve people around the table.

None of them shared my blood. None of them had known me when I was a little girl sitting alone in my bedroom, wishing my parents would ask about my day.

And yet, every single person in this room was my family.

I stepped out of the kitchen carrying a large ceramic bowl of fresh summer salad and set it in the center of the table.

The room quieted down, everyone looking up at me with warm, happy expressions.

Claire stood up, raising her glass of sparkling water.

"Before we pass the food," Claire said, looking around the bright, sunlit room, "I want to propose a toast to our host."

The guests clapped and cheered softly, raising their glasses.

"One year ago," Claire said, her voice filled with deep, affectionate emotion, "Natalie Brooks invited me to a dinner party that changed all of our lives. I walked into that room expecting to witness a routine financial dispute. Instead, I saw a woman step into her absolute power."

Claire turned her head to look straight into my eyes.

"Natalie," Claire said gently. "You showed all of us that family isn't something you are forced to endure. It is something you choose. It is built out of loyalty, respect, and unconditional love. Thank you for building this table for all of us."

"To Natalie!" Marcus raised his glass high.

"To Natalie!" the whole table echoed in unison, their voices ringing happily off the glass walls.

I looked around the table at each and every face—at Claire, my truest friend and business partner; at Marcus, who had fought beside me in every courtroom and boardroom; at Maya, who represented the future I was building; and at the dedicated team who made Northstar a beacon of hope in this city every single day.

I raised my own glass, a warm, genuine smile filling my face, my eyes bright with happy tears.

"Thank you, everyone," I said, my voice rich with peace. "Now... please eat. The table is finally complete."

I pulled out the master chair at the head of the oak table, sat down among the people who truly saw me, and took my place at the life I had built with my own hands.
