Chapter 10 - The Horizon

That evening, a private graduation dinner was held on the top floor of a waterfront restaurant overlooking Puget Sound.
The golden light of the setting sun reflected off the calm blue waters of the bay, painting the sky in brilliant hues of pink, orange, and violet.
The table was surrounded by the people who mattered: Lily, myself, Rebecca, Richard, Owen, Sarah, Dr. Vance, and Lily’s closest teammates.
After dinner, as the guests enjoyed dessert and coffee, Lily and I walked out onto the wooden balcony overlooking the water.
The cool evening breeze carried the salty scent of the ocean, blowing gently through Lily’s dark hair.
"Are you excited about California?" I asked softly, leaning my arms against the wooden railing beside her.
Lily smiled, looking out at the distant ferries crossing the sound. "I am. But I’m going to miss this house. I’m going to miss our evenings together."
"Stanford is only a two-hour flight, sweetie," I laughed gently, bumping my shoulder against hers. "And besides... I’ve already looked at apartments near Palo Alto. I might just have to visit you every weekend."
Lily laughed, wrapping her arm tightly around my waist. "You better."
She turned to face me, her green eyes reflecting the golden light of the setting sun.
"Thank you, Mom," she said, her voice turning soft, earnest, and deeply sincere. "Thank you for fighting for me. Thank you for never giving up on us."
I reached up, gently brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead, tracing the tiny, barely visible scar near her hairline—the mark of her survival, her strength, and her victory.
"You saved yourself, Lily," I said softly. "I just made sure the world treated you the way you deserved."
We stood together on the balcony, holding each other tight as the sun dipped beneath the horizon, casting a warm, unbroken light over the ocean ahead.

The past was gone. The burdens were lifted.
