Chapter 9 - The New Milestone

Spring arrived in Missouri with a brilliant explosion of blooming pink dogwoods and green grass.

It was May 2026.

My event planning business, Whitaker Events, was celebrating its fifth anniversary. To mark the milestone, we hosted an outdoor garden gala at the Botanical Center on South National Avenue—the premier event space in the city.

The venue was breathtaking. White linen tables stretched across the manicured lawns, string lights twinkled beneath the evening sky, and a live jazz quartet played softly near the grand fountain. Over two hundred guests had arrived—local business owners, hospital staff, city leaders, and old friends.

Even Cheryl Benson was there, looking elegant and behaving herself impeccably.

I stood near the entrance in a stunning rose-gold gown, holding a glass of sparkling water, greeting guests alongside my team.

"Dana Whitaker!"

I turned and saw Karen Wilkes walking toward me, wearing a bright green dress, holding a large gift bag.

"Karen! I’m so glad you could make it," I smiled, embracing her warmly.

"Are you kidding? I wouldn't miss this for the world!" Karen said, looking around at the grand event. "Dana, this is incredible. You have built an absolute empire in this town."

"It took a lot of hard work," I admitted gracefully.

Karen leaned in slightly, lowering her voice. "I just wanted to tell you... after what happened at the reunion last fall... everyone in town is so proud of you. You handled yourself with so much class, Dana. You showed everyone what real strength looks like."

"Thank you, Karen," I said sincerely. "That means a lot."

"And speaking of your family..." Karen pointed toward the grand fountain.

I turned and looked.

Thomas was standing near the water feature, wearing a sharp grey suit, holding four-year-old Leo on his shoulders so the boy could throw a shiny copper penny into the fountain. Leo was laughing hysterically as the water splashed his toes, his dark curls shining under the setting sun.

"They adore you," Karen whispered softly.

"I adore them," I replied, feeling a deep, profound gratitude swell inside my heart.

As the evening progressed, Thomas walked over to the small stage near the fountain and tapped his microphone. The gentle chatter of two hundred guests gradually subsided into attentiveness.

"Good evening, everyone," Thomas spoke into the mic, his rich voice echoing warmly across the garden. "Thank you all for being here tonight to celebrate five incredible years of Whitaker Events."

The crowd applauded warmly.

Thomas smiled, his hazel eyes finding mine across the lawn.

"Most of you know me as Dr. Thomas Vance, Chief of Pediatric Surgery," he continued. "But my favorite title in the world is simply 'Dana’s husband'. Five years ago, my wife started this business with nothing more than a used laptop, a small desk in our spare bedroom, and an absolute refusal to let life dictate her limits."

I felt a warm flush touch my cheeks as the crowd looked toward me, clapping enthusiastically.

"Dana built this company while raised a son, supported my crazy surgical hours, and brought an unbelievable amount of joy into every room she stepped into," Thomas said, his voice thick with emotion. "She is the strongest, most compassionate, most extraordinary woman I have ever known. So please, raise your glasses with me to my wife—Dana Whitaker Vance."

May you like

The crowd erupted into a resounding cheer.

I walked up the small steps of the stage, my heart overflowing, and stepped into Thomas’s arms. He kissed me deeply as the applause echoed through the spring night, with Leo standing right beside us, clapping his small hands with pure, unbridled joy.
