Chapter 5 - The Financial Collapse

Without my monthly subsidies, the house of cards Chloe and Mom had built began to collapse at alarming speed.
A week after the sidewalk confrontation, Marcus came to my office building alone. He didn't come in hot-headed like Chloe or entitled like Mom; he looked crushed. He asked the front desk if he could speak with me for five minutes. Out of mild curiosity, I agreed to meet him in the lobby coffee shop.
Marcus sat down, looking exhausted. He clutched a paper coffee cup with both hands. "Sarah... I’m not here to yell at you. I just... I need to know if there's any way you can help us figure a way out of this."
"Marcus," I said gently but firmly. "I am not giving your family another dime."
"I’m not asking for money," Marcus whispered, looking down at the floor. "I’m asking for honest advice. Chloe... she lied to me. She told me you were happy to pay for Leo’s private school tuition and his birthday parties. She told me you set up a trust fund for him. I didn't know she was using your emergency credit card behind your back."
I sat back, surprised. "You really didn't know?"
"I work part-time at the hardware store because Chloe insisted I stay home to help raise Leo," Marcus confessed, his voice cracking. "She kept telling me that you were backing us financially because you were single and had no kids to spend your money on. But when the phone lines went dark and your mother lost her SUV, Chloe’s real credit card statements started coming to the house. She has over forty thousand dollars in personal credit card debt. She’s been living a double life trying to match the wealthy moms at Leo’s school."
The truth was finally coming to light. Chloe hadn't just been leeching off me out of greed; she was using my hard-earned salary to fuel an illusion of high society, hiding her astronomical debt from her own husband while using Mom as her primary enabler.

"Marcus," I said, leaning forward. "If you want my professional financial advice, here it is: Pull Leo out of that private school immediately and put him in public school. Get a full-time job today. Take away Chloe’s credit cards, file for debt consolidation, and cut off your mother-in-law from your household decisions. If you don't do that, you will be bankrupt by the end of the year."
Marcus closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and nodded slowly. "Thank you, Sarah."
