Chapter 8 - The Verdict

It took the jury less than two hours to deliberate.

When the courtroom reconvened at 4:00 PM, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. The media cameras beamed the proceedings live across the country.

"Will the defendants please stand and face the jury?" Judge Thomas ordered.

Vanessa and Richard stood up, supported by their attorneys. Vanessa’s knees were shaking so violently she could barely keep her balance.

The jury foreperson, a stern-faced woman in her fifties, stood up and held the paper verdict forms.

"In the matter of the State v. Vanessa Bennett," Judge Thomas read aloud, "on Count 1, Grand Larceny in the First Degree, how do you find?"

"Guilty," the foreperson announced clearly.

Vanessa let out a choked gasp, clutching her attorney's sleeve.

"On Count 2, Forgery in the First Degree... Guilty."

"On Count 3, First-Degree Arson... Guilty."

"On Count 4, Evidence Tampering... Guilty."

"On Count 5, Corporate Tax Fraud... Guilty."

Guilty on all seventeen counts.

Judge Thomas then moved to Richard Sterling.

"On Count 1, Conspiracy to Commit Bank Fraud... Guilty."

"On Count 2, Money Laundering... Guilty."

"On Count 3, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon... Guilty."

Guilty on all twelve counts.

A wave of loud gasps and murmuring broke out across the gallery. Relatives wept openly. Richard slumped into his chair, staring blankly at the floor as if his mind had completely shattered.

Judge Thomas slammed her gavel down three times, restoring absolute order.

"Vanessa Bennett, Richard Sterling," Judge Thomas said, her voice dropping to a terrifyingly stern register. "The level of greed, deceit, and callous disregard for your own family demonstrated in this case is among the most appalling I have ever witnessed on this bench. You did not merely steal millions of dollars; you attempted to destroy human lives out of pure vanity."

She turned her papers over.

"Vanessa Bennett, I sentence you to twenty-two years in state prison without the possibility of parole for twelve years. Richard Sterling, I sentence you to twenty-eight years in federal penitentiary, alongside full financial restitution of all seized assets."

Vanessa shrieked in horror as the bailiffs immediately stepped forward, grabbing her arms and snapping heavy transport chains around her waist.

"Claire! Help me! Dad! Save me!" Vanessa screamed as she was pulled away toward the side holding cell door, her feet dragging along the floorboards. "Claire, I'm your sister! You can't do this to me! CLAIRE!"

I watched her go. The screams echoed down the concrete hallway until the heavy steel door slammed shut, cutting off her voice forever.

Special Prosecutor Zhang turned to me, offering her hand with a warm smile. "Justice has been served, Claire. Complete and total."

"Thank you, Patricia," I said softly, shaking her hand.

As I walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sunshine on the courthouse steps, a swarm of news reporters and camera crews rushed toward me, thrusting microphones into my face.

"Ms. Bennett! How do you feel about the verdict?"

"Claire, what are you going to do with the recovered millions?"

"Do you have anything to say to your family?"

I stopped at the top of the marble steps, looking out over the crowd of reporters, the flashing cameras, and the city skyline beyond.

"I have only one thing to say," I said clearly into the sea of microphones. "Wealth isn't defined by the size of your bank account or the table you sit at. It’s defined by how you treat the people who love you. My family tried to give my children empty plates... but today, we left with everything."

Without taking another question, I walked down the steps to where David Miller was waiting with my car door open. I got in, pulled the door closed, and drove away into a bright, clean future.
