Chapter 6 - The Media Empire Strikes BackBy morning, the news of David Whitaker’s arrest had broken, but it wasn't the narrative we expected.

Every major local news outlet carried headlines designed to protect the family: "Prominent Philanthropist David Whitaker Detained in Bizarre Family Dispute," and "Chicago Police Captain Accused of Extortion and Abuse of Power Against Wealthy In-Laws."
Margaret Whitaker had used her connections to launch a massive public relations blitz. She appeared on a prominent morning talk show, looking pale, elegant, and deeply sorrowful.
"It is a tragedy," Margaret said into the camera, dabbing a pristine white handkerchief to her dry eyes. "My daughter-in-law Sophie has been struggling with severe mental instability for years. My son David has done nothing but try to protect her. Unfortunately, his brother Mark, and Mark’s wife, Captain Claire Donovan, have used this family crisis to extort money from our foundation. Claire Donovan arrested my son without a valid warrant, using excessive force. It’s a political witch hunt."
I watched the broadcast from the precinct breakroom, my hands clenching around my coffee mug.
"She’s good," Officer Brady said, standing by the door. "People are believing her, Captain. The chief is getting bombarded with angry emails from voters. They want your badge."
"Let them want it," I said, getting up. "Where is Eleanor?"
"She’s at the federal courthouse. The grand jury is convening in an hour."
Before I could leave, my phone rang. It was an unknown number. I answered it.
"Claire," Margaret’s voice came through the line, cold and utterly devoid of the morning show's false grief. "I told you that you forgot your place. Look at the news. By tomorrow, your career will be over. Mark will never teach again. Sophie will be committed to an institution, and David will be home for dinner. This is your last chance. Destroy that ledger, have Sophie sign a retraction, and I will make sure you receive a comfortable early retirement package in Florida."
"You really don't get it, do you, Margaret?" I said, a slow smile spreading across my face. "You think the world operates on bribes and media spin because you've spent your whole life inside a bubble of privilege."
"The bubble works, Claire. It has worked for generations."
"Well, there's a leak in your bubble," I said. "Do you remember Officer Brady’s recording from the night you walked into my station? The one where you admitted David’s 'slaps' and threatened another beating?"
There was a sudden, sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line.
"I didn't send that to the local news, Margaret," I continued smoothly. "I sent it directly to the federal grand jury, along with the forensic photos of Sophie's fractured rib. While you've been busy playing celebrity on television, Eleanor Vance just secured an indictment against you for conspiracy, witness tampering, and accessory to aggravated battery."
"You... you wouldn't dare," Margaret whispered, her voice finally losing its stability.
May you like
"Turn on the news in ten minutes, Margaret. Look outside your window. I believe the FBI is just pulling into your driveway."
I hung up the phone before she could say another word.
