Chapter 7 - The Unbroken Thread

Night fell over the estate, dark and suffocating. Locked inside the second-floor bedroom, Leo sat by the balcony window, watching the rain strike the glass.

His small silver locket sat open in his palm. He looked at his mother's smile in the tiny photograph. They think we're trash, Mom, he thought. They think because we had nothing, we have no honor.

A soft click sounded at the door.

The door opened slowly, revealing Eleanor. She carried a tray with a warm bowl of soup, a glass of milk, and a small electronic keycard. She closed the door silently behind her and set the tray on the desk.

"You didn't take it," she said quietly, kneeling in front of his chair.

Leo looked up, his eyes rimmed with red. "Why do you believe me? The machine said my fingers were on it."

"Because a boy who thinned his own blood sliding under a truck to save a baby he didn't know doesn't steal USB drives," Eleanor said simply, her eyes full of warmth. "And because my husband spent the last four hours in the security control room. The hallway camera outside the study had its feed looped for forty seconds—a trick only someone with corporate admin clearance could pull."

Leo’s breath hitched. "Mr. Sterling knows?"

"He knows Victor is hiding something vast," Eleanor whispered. "Richard found old bank transfers from 2018. The month your mother was accused of stealing that three-million-dollar painting, a shell company owned by Victor received an off-shore deposit of exactly three million dollars."

Leo stood up, his small body trembling with decades of stored pain. "He destroyed my mother's life for money? She worked until she was sick! She couldn't afford her medicine!"

"I know, Leo. I am so, so sorry," Eleanor said, tears falling freely down her face. "Richard is downstairs right now setting a trap for Victor at tomorrow's emergency board meeting. But Victor is dangerous. He knows the ship is sinking."

Suddenly, the lights throughout the mansion went pitch black. The gentle hum of the air conditioning cut out, replaced by the heavy silence of an unpowered house.

Downstairs, a heavy glass window shattered with a deafening crash.

Eleanor stood up instantly, pulling Leo behind her back. "Stay close to me."

"Mrs. Sterling!" Julian’s voice echoed from the lower hallway, followed by the muffled sound of a struggle and a heavy thud.

Footsteps heavy and deliberate began ascending the main staircase. A flash of lightning illuminated the hallway outside, showing a shadowy figure holding an iron crowbar—Victor, his tie loosened, his eyes wild and unhinged.

"Eleanor!" Victor called out, his voice echoing eerily through the dark manor. "Don't make this harder than it needs to be! Richard thought he could lock down my accounts! He thinks he can hand my life over to a street rat!"
