Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Blood

The federal investigation into the Vance political machine moved with terrifying velocity.

With Attorney General Marcus Vance under house arrest, his uncle indicted, and his primary enforcers facing federal charges, the wall of silence that had protected the corrupt Texas dynasty for decades began to crumble from within.

Inside a secured federal office building in downtown Houston, Sarah Jenkins, Gavin, and FBI Agent Miller sat around a glass conference table covered with dozens of financial ledgers, bank statements, and land title deeds recovered from Safety Deposit Box 408.

"It wasn't just about a personal grudge, Gavin," Agent Miller explained, turning a large digital map toward them on a flat-screen monitor. "Five years ago, your wife, Sarah Cole, worked as a senior land surveyor for the Texas Department of Transportation."

Gavin looked at the map. It showed his family’s modest forty-acre ranch in East Texas—a property that had belonged to Gavin’s grandfather.

"Sarah was conducting a routine soil survey for a state highway expansion," Miller continued. "While drilling core samples on your forty acres, she discovered something your family never knew existed: the property sat directly on top of the Eagle Ford Shale Basin—one of the largest untapped lithium and natural gas reserves in North America, worth estimated billions."

Gavin’s eyes widened in absolute shock. "Lithium? On my grandfather's land?"

"Your wife realized the value immediately," Miller said grimly. "She prepared a confidential report to register the mineral rights under your family's name. But Marcus Vance—who was then a rising District Attorney and the lead investor in Vance Energy Holdings—intercepted the state geological filing."

"He tried to buy the land from her," Gavin realized, the horifying puzzle pieces finally locking together in his mind. "He sent two men to our house three weeks before she died. They offered me fifty thousand dollars for the forty acres. I turned them down because I wanted to build a horse barn for Chloe."

"When you refused to sell," Sarah Jenkins added softly, taking Gavin’s hand, "Vance couldn't take the land legally without revealing the geological report. So he decided to take it by force. He had your wife murdered, staged the scene to make it look like a domestic dispute, planted her blood on your work jacket while you were asleep, and used his control over the local forensics lab to fabricate the fingerprint evidence."

"And once I was on death row..." Gavin whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying, cold rage. "...state law dictated that a convicted capital murderer forfeits all property rights, allowing the state to seize the land at auction. And Vance’s shell company bought my grandfather's land for pennies."

"Exactly," Agent Miller nodded. "They built a twenty-million-dollar lithium extraction facility on your forty acres while you were sitting in a six-by-eight concrete cell waiting to die."

Gavin stood up, walking over to the window, looking out over the city skyline. His chest heaved with years of buried pain, fury, and grief. They hadn't just stolen five years of his life; they had murdered the mother of his child for rocks in the dirt.

"I want them ruined, Sarah," Gavin said, turning around, his brown eyes burning with an unshakeable, lethal determination. "I don't want a settlement. I don't want a plea bargain. I want Marcus Vance and every man who helped him to spend the rest of their lives in the exact same concrete cell they built for me."

"They will, Gavin," Sarah promised, her voice like iron. "Because next week, you take the stand at the Federal Grand Jury."
