Chapter 7 - What Lies Beneath

The air in the subterranean cellar was freezing, thick with the heavy stench of engine grease and damp masonry.
Madeline descended the wooden ladder slowly, her hands shaking as she reached the bottom. She extended her arms into the blackness, her boots stepping onto a smooth concrete floor.
She reached into her pocket. Her phone was gone, but her fingers touched something small and metallic—the brass restoration scraper she always kept in her sweater pocket for work. It wasn't much of a weapon, but the feel of the sharp steel gave her a shred of focus.
She took three slow steps forward, using her left hand to track the cold brick wall.
Suddenly, a faint blue light flickered in the distance.
Madeline froze, her breath catching in her throat.
The light was coming from a small wooden workbench set up in the corner of the cellar. A modern computer monitor sat on the desk, its screen glowing with lines of green code and streaming audio levels. Beside the monitor sat a professional-grade digital transmitter, its red indicator light blinking softly—once, twice, three times.
It was the source of the sound Lily had heard.
Caleb hadn't just been hiding from the police; he had been using the Blackwood estate’s underground infrastructure as a command center to monitor the Westbrook trust accounts and stream encrypted backup files from Julia’s old digital devices.
Madeline approached the desk carefully.
On the screen was a file directory labeled: JULIA_AUDIO_ARCHIVE_2015.
Madeline touched the wireless mouse. The screen flickered, revealing twenty-four recorded audio files. One file was highlighted, currently on a loop: TRACK_09_CABIN_CONVERSATION.WAV.
She pressed play.
A woman's voice—gasping, hysterical, terrified—filled the small cellar space through a pair of desktop speakers:
"...you took his papers, Caleb! I saw the passport in your bag! You left Ethan in the study... oh God, there's so much blood... he's not breathing, Caleb!"
Then came Caleb’s voice—colder, younger, but instantly recognizable:
"Shut up, Julia! He’s gone! The trust documents require a living trustee signature by Friday or the whole estate reverts to the state! We do this now, or we both end up with nothing!"
"I won't do it!" Julia screamed on the tape. "I hid the original trust ledger in the foundation wall! You'll never get the access codes without it!"
"Where is it, Julia?!"
"Under the brick seal behind the boiler! If you kill me, Caleb, the whole world will hear this tape! I set the server to auto-route to Marcus Vance’s private office if the key isn't reset every thirty days!"
The recording cut off with a loud burst of static.
Madeline stood frozen in front of the screen.
Marcus Vance hadn't just been Ethan’s corrupt lawyer. Marcus was the blackmailer. Marcus had known Caleb was an imposter for nine years, receiving monthly payouts from the trust to keep quiet about the recording.
That was why Marcus was here today. That was why he had locked her mother and daughter upstairs. He wasn't working for Caleb—he was managing his asset before the final cash-out.
A heavy wooden creak echoed from the ladder behind her.
"Fascinating recording, isn't it?" a voice spoke from the shadows.
Madeline turned around sharply, raising her brass scraper.
May you like
It wasn't Caleb standing at the base of the ladder.
It was Marcus Vance, holding a silenced 9mm pistol pointed directly at her chest.
