Chapter 9 - Letters from the Past

A few weeks after Emma and Sophie’s twelfth birthday, a registered letter arrived at the Concord house from the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut.

Michael was in his study when the mail arrived. He looked at the return address: Victoria Thompson - Inmate #88492.

He sat at his desk for a long time, holding the sealed envelope in his hands.

Under the terms of the court agreement, Victoria was permitted to send one written request every three years to review her parental status, though Michael retained absolute legal authority to reject it.

Michael stood up, walked into the kitchen, and found Emma sitting at the counter, studying for a science test.

"Emma," Michael said gently, sitting beside her.

Emma looked up from her textbook. She noticed the envelope in his hand and the serious look on his face. She recognized the prison seal immediately.

"Is that from... her?" Emma asked quietly.

"Yes," Michael said, setting the envelope on the table between them. "She wrote a letter. Under the law, you're twelve now. You have the right to decide if you want me to open it and read it to you, or if you want to leave it sealed."

Emma stared at the envelope for a long moment. There was no fear in her eyes, no panic, no lingering anger. Just a quiet, calm clarity.

She reached out, picked up the envelope, and walked over to the fireplace in the living room, where a warm fire was crackling.

Without hesitation, Emma tossed the unopened letter straight into the flames.

Michael watched as the paper caught fire, curling into black ash within seconds.

Emma turned back to face her father, a small, peaceful smile on her face. "Our family is right here in this room, Dad. I don't need letters from people who left us in the rain."

Michael felt a surge of intense pride so powerful it brought tears to his eyes. He walked over, pulled his oldest daughter into a tight hug, and kissed her forehead.

"You are so strong, Emma," Michael whispered.

"I learned it from you, Dad," Emma replied softly, hugging him back.
