Chapter 8 - The Clearing of the Ledger

The edge of the Chicago River near the old industrial canal was an oil-slicked expanse of black water, the surface rippling under the heavy summer rain. Damian held Marcus by the collar of his suit, his boots hovering over the concrete breakwater. The aluminum case containing the terminal sat on the hood of the Sprinter van forty yards back, connected to the wireless receiver in Eliza's hand.
"The code, Marcus," Eliza said, standing under the shelter of a rusted metal awning, her laptop open on a plastic crate. "The primary decryption sequence for the Voss Registry. Type it in, or Damian lets you go. The current is very strong tonight. It looks exactly like the water your men pulled my aunt out of in '96."
Marcus looked down at the swirling black water below his feet. His pulse monitor was beginning to chime, the red numbers jumping to 110... 125... 140.
"If I give you the code, you'll kill me anyway," Marcus gasped, his expensive leather shoes losing their grip on the slippery concrete edge.
"No," Damian said, his voice level and cold. "We won't kill you. We're going to leave you right here for the federal marshal service. I sent the raw coordinate packets from your own van to the regional field office ten minutes ago. They have the murder warrants for Arthur, for Clara Voss, and for my father-in-law. You're going to spend the rest of your life in a concrete box, Marcus. Just like the one you built for us."
Marcus stared at Damian, looking for a single trace of hesitation or bluff in the younger man's face. He found nothing. Damian Hart was a man who had survived the worst the city could offer because he had something Marcus could never understand—a family that was worth dying for.
With a trembling hand, Marcus reached out toward the wireless terminal Eliza held out to him. His thumb pressed against the biometric scanner on the chassis, and his fingers typed a twelve-digit alphanumeric sequence into the encrypted prompt: C_VOSS_1996_REDEEMED.
The laptop screen flashed a brilliant, solid blue.
System Unlocked. Harlow Trust Archive – Restored to Primary Beneficiaries. Voss Registry – Terminated.
Across the city, in dozens of hidden server banks and offshore banking nodes, the legal ownership of the Harlow fortune shifted back into the hands of Eliza and her brother, while the criminal shell companies used by the Vale syndicate began to dissolve into a trail of electronic breadcrumbs that would lead the FBI straight to every captain in the midwest region.
The distant sound of sirens began to echo through the industrial park, their blue and red lights reflecting against the low clouds.
Damian pulled Marcus back from the edge, dropping him into the mud like a sack of discarded rags. He didn't look back as he walked over to Eliza, pulling her and Oliver into his arms under the pouring rain.

"Is it over, Daddy?" Oliver whispered, his small hands wrapping around Damian's neck.
"It's over, little bird," Damian murmured, kissing the top of the boy's head. "The fire is out. We're going home."
