Chapter 6: The Hollow Aftermath

The smell of ozone and copper—spent gunpowder and blood—still clung to the air of the medical safehouse, even days after the siege. Dominic lay against the stack of pillows, his breathing shallow, the monitors tracking a heartbeat that had almost stopped three nights ago.

Elena sat by the window, watching the sunrise over the Briarhaven docks. She had replaced her silk gown for combat fatigues; the transition felt seamless, as if she had been wearing the armor of a soldier all along. The empire was not dead, but it was hollowed out. Isabella was in custody, but the vacuum she left behind was being filled by scavengers—minor capos and desperate lieutenants who thought the Salvatore name was finally ripe for the picking.

“You’re thinking about the succession again,” a raspy voice cut through her thoughts.

Elena turned. Dominic’s eyes were open, clear for the first time since the shooting. “I’m thinking about how much of this life is worth keeping,” she said, walking to his bedside. She placed a cool hand on his forehead. “The men are waiting for word, Dom. They don’t know if they’re serving a King or a memory.”

Dominic reached out, gripping her wrist with a strength that surprised her. “They’re serving you. I told them before the fever took me. The Salvatore name belongs to the one who didn’t break under the weight of it.”

“I didn’t fight to lead a crime family,” Elena whispered, her voice tight with suppressed emotion. “I fought to end the cycle.”

“Then end it,” Dominic urged, wincing as he sat up. “Don’t burn the kingdom to the ground. Transform it. Use the logistics, the resources, the reach—but turn it toward something legitimate. If you try to run it the way I did, you’ll just be another Isabella waiting for a bullet.”

The challenge was laid bare. Elena realized then that the "reckoning" wasn't over. The battle at the Metronome was merely the prologue to the hardest task of her life: dismantling a criminal empire from the inside out without losing their lives in the process.
