Chapter 2 - The House on South Ashland

The rain was coming down in sheets by the time the three-car convoy pulled up two blocks away from a dilapidated four-story tenement building on South Ashland Avenue. The neighborhood was dark, streetlight bulbs shattered, windows covered in plywood. It was the kind of place Chicago forgot about—a playground for predators.
Sophie sat in the back of the Cadillac with Tony’s junior guard, safely locked inside the bulletproof vehicle. Before Vincent stepped out into the pouring rain, he looked back at her.
"Stay here with Jimmy," Vincent told her gently. "I’m going to bring your mama out."
"You promise?" Sophie whimpered, holding her missing stuffed bear’s arm—a small plush foot she had kept in her pocket. "Nobody ever stops the bad men."
"I stop them," Vincent said.
He stepped out into the night, popping open a heavy black umbrella. Within moments, four dark SUVs pulled up behind him. Thirty men in black overcoats, carrying silenced submachine guns and heavy shotguns, stepped out into the storm without making a sound. Frank, a giant of a man who had served as Vincent’s chief enforcer for twenty years, walked up alongside his boss.
"Building’s surrounded, Mr. Torino," Frank reported, his voice like gravel grinding together. "Thermal scope shows three hostiles on the second floor. One female target on the floor, weak heart rhythm. They're still beating her."
Vincent didn't draw a gun. He didn't need to. "No survivors among the guards. I want Marco Vane alive. Just barely."
"Understood, Boss."
They moved like ghosts. Frank kicked the heavy front door off its rusted hinges, and the strike team flooded the narrow, urine-scented hallway. They moved up the creaking wooden stairs with practiced, military precision.
On the second floor, a guard sitting on an overturned bucket with a shotgun looked up in shock—before a single suppressed round from Frank’s pistol put him down quietly against the peeling wallpaper.
At the end of the hall, Apartment 2B’s door was cracked open. The sound of heavy leather boots stomping on floorboards and a woman’s weak, agonized moans spilled out into the corridor.
"I’m gonna ask you one more time, you miserable bitch!" a coarse, rasping voice yelled from inside. "Where did your dead husband hide the ledger? The offshore accounts! Where are they?"
A wet slap echoed, followed by a faint, agonizing gasp. "I... I don't know... please... my little girl..."
Vincent didn't wait for Frank. He walked straight up to the door and kicked it inward with the force of a battering ram.
The door flew off its frame, smashing into a tall goon holding a brass knuckle. Before the goon could recover, Frank stepped in and put a bullet through his thigh, dropping him to the floor groaning.
In the center of the cramped, tiny living room, lit by a single swinging bulb, stood Marco Vane. He was a skinny, feral-looking man with a jagged purple scar running through his left eye, holding a steel crowbar dripping with crimson.
On the floor beneath him lay Elena Martinez. Her face was swollen, her dress torn, blood pooling around her dark hair. She was barely conscious, her fingers twitching uselessly on the worn carpet.
Marco whirled around, drawing a heavy revolver from his waistband. "What the hell?! Who the fuck are—"
He stopped dead in his tracks. The color drained out of his face so fast he looked like a corpse.
"Torino?" Marco stammered, his eyes darting frantically past Vincent to the eight heavily armed men filling the hallway behind him. "What... what the fuck are you doing here, Vincent? This is Ironhead territory! You're breaking the treaty!"
Vincent walked slowly into the room. He didn't look at Marco. He looked down at Elena. Her eyes opened slightly, blood-crusted and swelling shut, but she looked up at the tall man in the immaculate three-piece suit.
"Sophie..." Elena gasped, her voice barely a whisper. "Where... where is my baby..."
"She's safe," Vincent said softly, dropping to one knee beside her, taking off his expensive silk scarf and pressing it gently against the deep gash on her forehead to stop the bleeding. "She came to me. She's outside in my car. You did good, Mama. You protected her."
Elena’s body relaxed slightly, a tear washing a clean path through the blood on her cheek, before her eyes rolled back and she went completely limp.
"She’s still breathing," Frank said, checking her neck pulse. "We need a trauma unit right now."
"Call Doc Mercer. Tell him to prep the private surgery at the estate," Vincent ordered.
"Hey! Are you ignoring me?!" Marco shrieked, his voice cracking with terror as he backed into the kitchen counter, aiming his gun with trembling hands. "My brother Victor will tear your fucking heart out for this, Torino! You can't touch me! You hear me? You can't touch a Vane!"
Vincent stood up slowly. He turned around. The gentle, human expression he had used with Elena vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, demonic void that had terrified Chicago for thirty years.
He walked straight toward the barrel of Marco’s gun.
"Shoot him!" Marco screamed to his downed guard. "Shoot him!"
Vincent didn't even blink. He reached out, grabbed the barrel of Marco’s revolver, shoved his thumb behind the hammer so it couldn't strike, and twisted Marco’s wrist with a sickening CRACK.
Marco shrieked in agony as the gun clattered to the floor. Before he could hit the ground, Vincent grabbed him by the throat, hoisting him up against the kitchen wall, slamming his head against the plaster until dust rained down.
"You lay your hands on a mother in front of her child," Vincent whispered into Marco’s ear, his voice a freezing wind from the grave. "You bleed a little girl's dress. You bring this filth into my city."
"Vincent... please..." Marco choked out, blood leaking from his mouth. "It was just business... the ledger... her husband stole millions from Victor..."
"Your business is finished," Vincent said. He looked at Frank. "Take his fingers. All of them. Then send him back to Victor in a box with a message."
"What message, Boss?" Frank asked.
May you like
Vincent looked at the pool of Elena's blood on the floor.
"Tell Victor that Chicago belongs to a man with a heart again."
