Chapter 4 - The Courthouse Confrontation

The lobby of the Franklin County Courthouse was a swirling vortex of media reporters, television cameras, and flashbulbs. News of the sudden federal investigation into the Sullivan Trust had leaked overnight, turning a routine probate dispute into front-page national news.
When our black SUV pulled up to the courthouse steps, a wall of microphones and reporters surged forward.
My heart hammered against my ribs, but Brennan extended his arm, resting his hand firmly on the small of my back. His touch was grounding, radiating absolute, unshakable power. As we walked through the media storm, flashbulbs popping blindingly around us, Brennan’s security detail formed an impenetrable human shield, pushing the press back without a single harsh word.
We entered through the private judicial elevator, bypassing the chaotic public security lines entirely, and stepped directly into the chambers of Judge Thomas Sterling.
Judge Sterling, a distinguished jurist with sharp silver hair and a reputation for incorruptibility, looked up from his mahogany desk as we entered.
“Mr. Hayes. And you must be Mrs. Sullivan,” Judge Sterling said, standing up to shake my hand. “I’ve reviewed the emergency injunction and the digital evidence provided by your legal counsel. It is... profoundly disturbing.”
“It is criminal, Your Honor,” Brennan said smoothly, taking a seat opposite the bench.
Before the judge could respond, the heavy oak door to chambers burst open.
Arthur Sullivan marched in, flanked by his attorney Gregory Finch and two sweating associates. Arthur’s face was purple with fury, his eyes darting wildly between Brennan, myself, and the judge.
“This is an outrage!” Arthur bellowed, slamming his briefcase down on a side table. “Your Honor, this court has no jurisdiction to freeze the assets of a multi-generational family trust based on the hysterical fabrications of a disgruntled former employee!”
“Mr. Sullivan,” Judge Sterling’s voice dropped an octave, cutting through Arthur’s rant like a razor. “Lower your voice. You are in a judicial chambers, not your country club.”
Arthur swallowed hard, glaring at me with undisguised hatred. “She signed the papers, Your Honor! Voluntarily! She walked away from everything!”
“Did she?” Judge Sterling asked calmly.
The judge pressed a button on his intercom, and a large wall-mounted monitor in the corner of the chambers lit up.
Instantly, the high-definition security footage from the Sullivan foyer began to play. The audio filled the quiet room with chilling clarity: “Sign the renunciation. You leave with nothing... Take the rings. Then throw her out... Accidents occur on those cliff roads every day.”
Arthur’s face turned the color of ash.
Gregory Finch stared at the floor, his professional facade utterly shattered.
“Is that your voice, Mr. Sullivan?” Judge Sterling asked quietly, leaning back in his leather chair. “Threatening physical violence, directing the forcible removal of a grieving widow, and conspiring to fabricate probate documents?”
“That... that video was illegally obtained!” Arthur stammered, pointing a shaking finger at the screen. “It’s a privacy violation! It’s inadmissible!”
“It is a recording of an active felony being committed in a domestic residence,” Judge Sterling corrected coldly. “Furthermore, the forensic audit provided by Mr. Hayes’s team details over twelve million dollars in systemic embezzlement from subsidiary accounts—funds rightfully belonging to the estate of the late Leo Sullivan, and by extension, his legal spouse.”
The judge picked up his heavy wooden gavel.

“The emergency asset freeze on the Sullivan Trust remains in full effect. Furthermore, I am officially nullifying the fraudulent probate filing submitted by Mr. Finch, and turning these files over to the U.S. Attorney’s office for immediate criminal indictment.”
Arthur stumbled backward, catching himself against the edge of a mahogany bookshelf. He looked at me—truly looked at me—for the first time in years. There was no condescension left in his eyes. Only sheer, unadulterated terror.
