Chapter 7 - The Final Audit

Two weeks later, the autumn air turned crisp and biting, carrying the unmistakable scent of approaching winter across the Boston harbor.
Inside the expansive, sunlit design studio on the top floor of the Victoria Tower, rolls of fine Italian silk, cashmere, and organic cotton cascaded across drafting tables. My team of designers and architects were busy finalizing the blueprint for our upcoming maternity and infant luxury line—a project I had personally conceptualized during the long, lonely months of my marriage.
The studio doors opened, and Marcus Vance walked in, carrying a thick leather binder stamped with federal court seals.
“Afternoon, Madam CEO,” Marcus greeted with a respectful nod. “I come bearing final paperwork.”
I looked up from sketching a delicate, lace-trimmed infant receiving blanket, setting my charcoal pencil down. “Give me the good news.”
“The federal grand jury formally indicted Arthur and Evelyn Ashford this morning on twelve counts of wire fraud, tax evasion, and conspiracy,” Marcus reported smoothly, sliding the binder onto my desk. “Furthermore, their personal bank accounts have been entirely wiped out to satisfy federal restitution orders. They are officially bankrupt. Their social club memberships have been revoked, and their former friends won't even return their phone calls.”
I opened the binder, scanning the summary of asset liquidation. Every dollar they had stolen, every account they had hidden, and every property they had claimed as their birthright had been legally reclaimed by Victoria Holdings.
“And Grant?” I asked.
“Plea negotiations concluded an hour ago,” Marcus replied. “Eight years in federal penitentiary, with no possibility of parole, followed by lifetime restriction from serving as an officer in any corporation. His legal career is permanently over.”
I closed the binder, letting out a long, steady breath. The final chapter of that dark, suffocating era of my life was officially closed.

“Thank you, Marcus,” I said softly. “You’ve done exceptional work.”
“It was an honor, Madam CEO. Besides,” Marcus smiled, “protecting the real estate empire of Victoria Holdings is always an interesting day at the office.”
