Chapter 9 - The Verdict of the Heart

Judge Sterling looked at the tattered leather notebook that Diane Vance presented to the bench. She spent fifteen minutes reading the pages in absolute silence, the only sound in the courtroom being the soft turning of the paper.
Vanessa’s lawyer stood up quickly. "Your Honor! We object to that document! It’s a fabricated piece of propaganda created by the domestic staff to secure her employment!"
"Sit down, counselor," Judge Sterling snapped without looking up from the notebook. "This is an eleven-year-old boy’s handwriting, and the ink on the early pages is over eighteen months old. Unless your client is suggesting a housekeeper managed to travel back in time to forge a ledger, this objection is overruled."
The judge closed the notebook, setting it neatly on top of her legal briefs. She looked at Vanessa, then at William, her eyes narrowing behind her glasses.
"Mrs. Carter," Judge Sterling said, her voice dropping into a chilly, condemnatory tone. "You claim you left this family due to the 'suffocating environment' created by your husband’s career. Yet, in this notebook, your son Luke tracks your departures long before you permanently walked out. He notes that you forgot their birthday because you were at a resort in Aspen. He notes that you told them they were 'ruining your figure' when they asked to be held."
Vanessa stood up, her face turning an angry shade of crimson. "This is a conspiracy! William paid off the social worker! Those boys are liars!"
"Silence!" Judge Sterling banged her gavel with a crack that made the entire courtroom jump. "Your behavior in this courtroom only confirms the evaluations provided by the state. You do not want these children, Mrs. Carter. You want the financial leverages attached to them. This court will not allow children to be used as corporate chess pieces."
The judge picked up her pen, signing a heavy document with sharp, definitive strokes.
"On the matter of custody, the petitioner’s motion for emergency residency is denied," Judge Sterling announced. "Full legal and physical custody of Mason and Luke Carter remains solely with William Carter. Furthermore, due to the documented emotional harm caused by the petitioner’s recent actions, Mrs. Carter’s visitation rights are completely suspended until the children reach the age of majority, or until they themselves request contact through a court-appointed counselor."
Vanessa let out a sharp, ugly shriek of frustration, turning on her heel and marching out of the courtroom, her legal team scurrying behind her like rats leaving a sinking ship. The reporters rushed after her, the heavy double doors swinging wildly.

Inside the quiet courtroom, William stood up slowly. He turned around, his eyes filled with a deep, shining moisture as he looked at his sons, who were sitting in the front row next to me.
Mason and Luke didn't wait for permission. They ran past the security bar, throwing themselves into their father’s arms. William dropped to his knees on the courtroom floor, wrapping his massive arms around both of his boys, burying his face in their shoulders as he wept openly—a billionaire who had finally realized that his greatest wealth was currently locked in his embrace.
