Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

The peace, however, was short-lived. The day of the final estate hearing arrived, and with it came the legal storm that Julian had been dreading.
We traveled to the city court under heavy security. The Moretti syndicate, realizing their kidnapping plot had failed, had changed tactics. They had bribed a corrupt faction of Elena’s surviving family members to launch a massive custody battle over Mikey, claiming Julian’s dangerous lifestyle made him an unfit parent.
The courtroom was closed to the public, filled only with lawyers, judges, and the heavy air of corporate warfare.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, holding Mikey’s hand while Julian sat at the defense table with his team of high-priced attorneys. Across the aisle sat Elena’s estranged uncle, a greasy man named Richard, flanked by lawyers who looked like vultures.
“Your Honor,” Richard’s attorney bellowed, presenting a stack of documents. “Julian Vance’s life is a magnet for violence. Just last week, there was an armed infiltration at Blackwood Manor. A child cannot be raised in a warzone. We demand that guardianship of Michael Vance be transferred to his maternal family, along with the management of the trust funds left by the late Elena Vance.”
The real motive was laid bare: the money. They didn't care about Mikey; they cared about the billions tied to his name.
Julian stood up, his face reverting to that terrifying, cold mask I had seen on our first day. “My son stays with me. The infiltration was handled, and the threat has been neutralized. Moving him to a family that hasn't seen him in five years is not a solution; it's an extortion attempt.”
“Mr. Vance, your lifestyle is the threat,” the judge said, looking down from the bench with a worried expression. “The court cannot ignore the safety reports. If your home is a target, we must consider alternative arrangements for the boy.”
The vultures across the aisle smiled. Mikey gripped my hand so hard it went numb.
“Your Honor, if I may,” I stood up from the gallery.
The courtroom went silent. Julian’s lawyers looked at me in shock. Julian turned around, his eyes wide with warning, but there was also a desperate plea in them.
“And who are you?” the judge asked, peering over his glasses.
“My name is Eleanor Carter,” I said, stepping past the gate into the well of the court. “I am Michael’s primary caregiver. And I am the one who stopped the infiltration last week.”
A murmur rippled through the lawyers.
“I am not part of the Vance empire,” I said, keeping my voice steady and clear. “I am a waitress. I met Mikey when he was starving behind my diner. I saw a boy who was lonely and scared. But over the last few weeks, I have seen Julian Vance change. I have seen him tear down his walls to become the father his son needs. Blackwood Manor isn't a warzone anymore. It’s a home. If you take Mikey away from the only person who truly loves him, you aren't protecting him. You’re destroying him.”

The judge looked at me, then down at Mikey, who was nodding vigorously with tears in his eyes. Finally, the judge looked at Julian, whose gaze was fixed entirely on me, filled with an emotion so profound it made my heart ache.
“We will take a two-hour recess,” the judge announced, slamming his gavel. “To review the safety measures and interview the child privately.”
