Chapter 6 - The Confrontation at the Peninsula

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the snowstorm had cleared, leaving Chicago glistening under a sharp, icy sun.

Donald Vance had set up an emergency operations base at the luxury Peninsula Hotel in downtown Chicago, where he was scheduled to sign the formal court injunction papers against Aetheria Renewables at noon.

He had no idea that Blake was even in Illinois, let alone sitting in my house working alongside me.

At 10:30 AM, a fleet of three black SUVs pulled up to the front entrance of the Peninsula.

Blake stepped out of the lead vehicle, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, his posture tall and imposing. I stepped out right beside him, wearing an emerald-green professional suit, holding a leather briefcase packed with federal indictment drafts and financial audits. Behind us walked a team of six federal investigators from the SEC and two uniformed Chicago police officers.

We walked through the opulent marble lobby, taking the private elevator up to the executive conference floor.

Inside the grand board room, Donald Vance was sitting at the head of a long glass table, sipping espresso while chatting with his team of high-priced corporate attorneys.

"The injunction is ironclad, gentlemen," Vance was saying with a smug chuckle. "By tomorrow, Emma Winters will be forced to hand over her master patent keys to Vanguard, or face federal asset freezing."

The heavy double doors swept open.

Vance looked up, a condescending smile forming on his face—until his eyes landed on Blake and me walking side-by-side into the room.

The cup of espresso in Vance’s hand wobbled, spilling black coffee onto his pristine white cuffs.

"Blake...?" Vance stammered, scrambling out of his chair, his face losing its color. "What... what are you doing here? You were supposed to be flying back to New York from Denver!"

"My plans changed, Donald," Blake said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stepped up to the table. "I took a pit stop to visit my wife."

Vance’s eyes darted frantically between Blake and me, his smooth lawyerly persona beginning to fray at the edges. "Wife? Blake, she’s your ex-wife! She's the woman who betrayed you! Her company is currently stealing our IP—"

"Shut up, Donald," Blake commanded, the sheer power of his voice reverberating through the vast room, causing Vance's attorneys to flinch.

I stepped forward, laying a thick manila folder onto the glass table directly in front of Vance.

"Inside that folder, Donald," I said clearly, "are the audited bank logs from Helios Holdings, the recorded confession from Dr. Aris in North Carolina regarding Charlotte’s altered records, and an emergency federal freeze order on all your domestic and offshore accounts."

Vance backed away from the table, his breath coming in shallow gasps. "This is absurdity! It's a conspiracy! Blake, she’s manipulating you again! She’s using her old charm to throw you off the trail—"

"I said shut your mouth!" Blake roared, stepping around the table, forcing Vance to retreat against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the city. "You used my dead sister-in-law. You fabricated evidence. You stole from my company, and you drove a knife into the heart of my family!"

Blake reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a document, slapping it against Vance's chest.

"That is your formal, immediate termination notice from Vanguard Clean-Tech," Blake spat out. "Effective ten seconds ago, your voting rights are revoked, your stock options are nullified, and your security clearances are wiped."

The two federal investigators stepped forward, displaying their badges.

"Donald Vance," the lead agent announced. "You are under arrest for Federal Securities Fraud, Wire Fraud, Extortion, and Witness Tampering."

As the police officers pulled Vance’s arms behind his back and clicked the heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists, the disgraced lawyer looked at me with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You think you won, Emma?" Vance sneered as he was led away. "You think he’s ever going to be a real father to those boys? He threw you out once! He’ll break your heart again!"

I stood next to Blake, looking at Vance with calm, unwavering strength. "The difference between five years ago and today, Donald, is that today, we see you clearly. And you're going to prison."
