Challenges remained. Thomas launched a final desperate bid for reconciliation through a lengthy letter and attempts to contact her through mutual friends. He had hit rock bottom—lost his partnership, estranged from some family.

Lydia met him one last time in a park, Julian waiting supportively at a distance. Thomas looked broken.

“I destroyed the best thing I ever had,” he admitted. “I hope one day you can forgive me, even if we never speak again.”

“I forgive you for my own sake,” Lydia said. “Not because you deserve it. Because I choose to live free of you.”

It was the closure she needed.
