Chapter 6 - Clara’s Voice

Inside the speeding Suburban, the only sound was the heavy hum of the bulletproof tires on the wet asphalt and the crackle of Dominic’s tactical radio monitoring enemy chatter.

Grant unfolded the thin, yellowed sheet of stationery. Clara’s elegant cursive handwriting filled the page.

Grant read the letter silently, his grey eyes scanning the lines, his breath catching in his throat twice before he finished.

"Read it aloud, Grant," I whispered softly from the seat beside him. "Ethan deserves to know what his mother wanted to say."

Grant swallowed hard, clearing his rough throat. He looked at Ethan, who was watching his father’s face with quiet, intense focus.

Grant began to read, his voice raspy with emotion:

"My dearest Grant,

If you are reading this letter, it means I am gone, and Daniel’s shadow has finally fallen across our lives. I am so sorry I couldn't tell you the truth to your face, but Daniel has tapped our house lines, our computers, and our security detail. He threatened to kill Ethan if I ever uttered a word to you.

Grant, our son is not broken. Ethan was born deaf, but he possesses a brilliant, beautiful mind. He sees the world in shapes, colors, and pure truth. Daniel tried to convince you that Ethan was a liability because Daniel knew that a child who sees everything and cannot be manipulated by words is the greatest threat to a liar.

I have hidden the master ledger and the port override key beneath Ethan’s print. I knew our boy would lead you to it when the time was right.

Do not spend your life seeking revenge, my love. Use the evidence in this box to tear down the dark world you built, and build a new life for our son where he can speak with his hands without fear.

I love you both, forever and always.

Clara."

Silence hung over the interior of the vehicle.

Grant closed his eyes, two thick tears tracking down his cheeks. He folded the letter carefully and placed it into his inner breast pocket, directly over his heart.

He looked across the seat at me. "Your sister, Elena... she was helping Clara, wasn't she?"

I nodded slowly, my eyes stinging with tears. "Six years ago, Elena told me she was working with a wealthy mother who wanted to build a regional school for deaf children in Harbor City. Elena said the mother was trying to create a safe haven away from her husband’s criminal world. That was Clara."

"And Daniel killed them both to protect his grip on my empire," Grant said, his tone dropping into a icy, terrifying register of absolute finality.

"Boss," Dominic called out from the front passenger seat, looking at his tablet monitor. "Julian Marchetti has just issued an all-points hit order across the city underworld. He’s claiming you executed Daniel Crane in cold blood and stole family assets. Every armed gang from the West Docks to the North River is mobilization right now."

Grant reached down and picked up the silver USB drive from the steel box. He turned it over in his hand.

"Julian thinks he’s hunting us," Grant said quietly. "He doesn't know we hold the power to shut down his entire existence."

"What is your command, Boss?" Dominic asked.

"Call Federal Prosecutor Sarah Vance," Grant ordered.

I gasped. "Sarah Vance? That’s my older cousin!"

Grant looked at me, a sharp, cold glint in his grey eyes. "Your cousin has spent four years trying to dismantle the Harbor City organized crime syndicate. In thirty minutes, I am going to hand her the master ledger, the port access drive, and my full confession."

"Your confession?" I asked, my heart skipping a beat. "Grant, if you confess, you'll go to prison!"

"I spent fifteen years building a kingdom of blood, Maya," Grant said, looking down at Ethan, who was currently fast asleep against my side, exhausted from the morning's trauma. "I belong behind bars for what I’ve done. But before I surrender to the feds, I am going to make sure Julian Marchetti and every man who helped Daniel Crane are wiped off the face of this city."

He looked at me with an intensity that made my breath catch in my throat.

"And I need you to promise me one thing, Maya."

"Anything," I said softly.

May you like

"If I don't survive tonight," Grant said, "take Ethan. Use my offshore trust to build Clara’s school. Teach my son how to live."

I reached out, my fingers wrapping tightly around Grant’s hand. "You're going to survive tonight, Grant Whitmore. Because your son isn't going to lose both his parents to this city."
