Chapter 5 - The Falcone Ultimatum

The next morning, the forest outside was blanketed in a heavy, pristine layer of fresh snow.

Inside the cabin, the atmosphere was vastly different. The girls were surprisingly resilient; kids have a remarkable capacity to adapt to chaos when they feel protected. By 9:00 a.m., the oldest, Chloe, was teaching her sisters how to play chess using an old wooden set she found on my bookshelf, while Rosa helped in the kitchen.

I stood by the communication console in my private basement office, tapping away at an encrypted satellite terminal.

The screen flickered to life, displaying a secure text feed routed through three different proxy servers across Europe. It was a direct message from an unknown burner number.

“Vance. You think a cabin in the woods can hide you? Don Falcone wants his property back. Bring yourself and the waitress to the old shipyard on Pier 41 by midnight tomorrow. Come alone, or the girl's school gets a visit from my cleanup crew.”

My jaw tightened until the bone ached. They had tracked us across state lines. They had found the kids' school directory.

Before I could type a reply, the basement door creaked open. Rosa stood at the top of the wooden stairs, looking down at me with an expression that told me she already knew.

"They sent a message," she said, descending the steps and walking over to the console.

"They did," I admitted, closing the terminal screen to hide the details. "Pier 41. Tomorrow night."

"They're using the girls as leverage," Rosa stated flatly, her voice terrifyingly calm. "They know about the school. They know we can't hide forever."

"I'm not going to let them touch your daughters, Rosa," I said, standing up and towering over her by a head. "I'm going to the shipyard alone. I'll settle this with Falcone once and for all."

"And if you don't come back?" Rosa challenged, stepping right into my space, her dark eyes burning with intensity. "Who protects them then? You think a cabin in the woods and a stash of guns is going to keep them safe from an entire syndicate? You're playing hero, Vance, but heroes always end up in body bags."

"What's your alternative?" I demanded. "Let them walk in here and slaughter us all?"

"No," Rosa said, her voice dropping into a lethal, resolute whisper. "We don't wait for them to come to us. We use what we have, we draw them out on our terms, and we take Falcone's head before he even knows we've left the woods."
