Chapter 3 - The Legal Battalion

By 0600 the following morning, the sun had barely crested the horizon when I sat in the downtown office of Captain Thomas Miller—a retired Judge Advocate General (JAG) officer turned high-powered civilian defense attorney.
Miller was a man with iron-grey hair, a permanent scowl, and a reputation for tearing fraudulent financial syndicates to shreds. On his mahogany desk lay the three-inch-thick stack of forged loan documents, bank statements, and the eviction notice I had brought with me.
Miller flipped through the pages, his gold pen hovering over the forged signatures.
"This isn't just a bitter divorce case, Marcus," Miller said, his sharp eyes narrowing behind gold-rimmed glasses. "This is organized, premeditated military financial predation. Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) violations, identity theft, child abandonment, and multi-state bank fraud."
"I saw her last night, Thomas," I said, leaning forward, my hands folded tightly on his desk. "She was sitting in the passenger seat of the very BMW she bought using my stolen credit identity. She was with the guy who purports to own the distressed deed to my house—Victor Vance."
Miller dropped his pen onto the desk with a heavy clatter. "Victor Vance? The real estate developer?"
"You know him?"
"Vance is under informal investigation by the State Attorney General's office," Miller revealed, pulling up a file on his dual-monitor computer setup. "He runs a predatory foreclosure scheme. His company targets deployed military personnel, uses fraudulent straw-buyers to fabricate default judgments while the service member is out of the country, buys the deeds at rigged sheriff sales for pennies on the dollar, and then flips the properties to luxury developers."
Miller tapped the screen, showing a corporate flow chart connecting Vance Properties to an offshore holding company named Aegis Holdings.
"And guess who sits on the board of Aegis Holdings as a paid consultant?" Miller asked, turning the screen toward me.
There was Rachel’s mugshot-style corporate photo, listed under her maiden name, Rachel Sterling. Her title: Director of Asset Acquisition.
My blood turned to ice water. "She didn't just leave out of weakness or exhaustion. She partnered with Vance to strip my assets while I was deployed."
"She traded your life savings, your home, and your children's security for a partnership stake in Vance's real estate scam," Miller confirmed grimly. "They assumed you wouldn't survive the deployment, Marcus. Or at the very least, that you'd return so broken, shell-shocked, and broke that you couldn't fight back before the seventy-two-hour eviction expired."
I stood up slowly, picking up my military cover from the chair beside me. "They miscalculated."
"What's your move, Marcus?" Miller asked, standing up with me.
"First, we secure my children," I said, my voice cold and focused. "Second, we stop that eviction. Third, I want every single penny she stole returned to a trust account for Emma and Caleb. And fourth... I want Vance and Rachel in federal handcuffs."
Miller let out a grim, approving smile. "The SCRA gives deployed soldiers absolute immunity against default judgments executed without proper representation. Vance thinks he has seventy-two hours to toss you onto the street. He doesn't know that I'm filing an emergency federal injunction with Judge Katherine Sterling at 0900 hours."
May you like
"Will she grant the injunction?"
"Judge Sterling is a former Marine combat veteran," Miller said, snapping his briefcase shut. "Vance isn't just going to lose that eviction order, Marcus. He's about to walk directly into a judicial meat grinder."
