Chapter 6 - The Injunction

Monday morning arrived with the force of a hammer.

Armed with the evidence of my parents' secret financial collapse and the existence of Emily’s upcoming trust fund, Marcus Vance filed a multi-pronged legal attack in the Franklin County Common Pleas Court.

First, he converted our temporary protection order into a motion for a Permanent Civil Protection Order. Second, he filed a motion for Sanctions against Richard and Margaret Carter for fraudulent court filings and legal harassment. Third, he submitted an emergency motion to freeze any attempt by third parties to access or alter the terms of the Emily Carter Educational Trust.

At 10:00 AM, we stood inside Courtroom 4B for the preliminary emergency hearing.

The courtroom was quiet, cold, and imposing. I sat at the plaintiff’s table beside Marcus, wearing a charcoal grey suit, my posture straight and unyielding.

Across the aisle sat my parents. Margaret looked visibly aged, the stress of the past week finally breaking through her heavy makeup. Richard sat beside her, looking furiously at his own attorney—a slick, overpriced defense lawyer named Harold Vance (no relation to Marcus).

Judge Victoria Vance (the judge presiding over family matters, entirely unrelated to the HR head or my lawyer) took the bench, snapping her glasses into place.

"We are here in the matter of Carter v. Carter," Judge Vance announced, her voice echoing off the wood paneling. "I have read the emergency motions submitted by the petitioner, Ms. Maya Carter, as well as the response from the respondents."

Harold Vance stood up immediately for my parents. "Your Honor, this is a tragic case of a daughter alienating her loving grandparents. My clients simply stepped in to care for their granddaughter while the petitioner was away on business—"

"Mr. Vance," Judge Vance interrupted sharply, holding up a finger. "I have read the certified clinical psychological report from Dr. Aris Thorne regarding the minor child, Emily Carter. Dr. Thorne’s findings detail severe emotional trauma, food restriction, and psychological manipulation occurring while the child was in your clients' care."

Harold blanched slightly. "Your Honor, those claims are exaggerated—"

"I also have before me," Judge Vance continued, her eyes darkening as she picked up another file, "financial records indicating that your clients are currently facing multiple state tax liens, while simultaneously attempting to draft affidavits to secure guardianship of the minor child prior to her tenth birthday—a birthday that unlocks access to a substantial trust fund."

Margaret gasped softly from the defense table. Richard turned to glare at his lawyer.

"The court takes a extremely grim view of individuals who attempt to use the judicial system as a weapon for financial self-salvage," Judge Vance said, her tone dripping with ice. "Effective immediately, I am extending the Temporary Protection Order into a Full Injunction pending trial. Respondents Richard and Margaret Carter are forbidden from coming within 1,000 feet of Maya Carter, Emily Carter, their home, Emily's school, and Ms. Carter's place of employment."

Judge Vance struck her gavel down with a sharp clack.

"Furthermore, I am ordering a full forensic financial audit of the respondents' real estate firm to determine if any preparatory steps were taken to illegally convert trust assets. We are adjourned."

As the judge exited the bench, Margaret sprang out of her seat, breaking past her lawyer.

"Maya!" she screamed across the aisle, her face contorted in pure, unadulterated venom. "You evil, ungrateful bitch! After everything we gave you! You destroyed this family!"

Two court bailiffs immediately moved in, grabbing Margaret by the arms and pinning her hands behind her back.

"Respondent, quiet down or you will be held in contempt and jailed immediately!" the lead bailiff barked.

I stood up slowly, adjusted my jacket, and looked directly into my mother's screaming face. I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel fear. I felt only a vast, clean emptiness where their control used to live.

"I didn't destroy this family, Margaret," I said softly, though my voice carried across the quiet room. "You did the moment you made my daughter cry for eating breakfast."

I turned my back on her and walked out of the courtroom beside Marcus, leaving her screaming into the cold air of the courthouse gallery.
