Chapter 10 - SUNRISE

Six months later.
The snows of that brutal winter had long since melted, giving way to the lush, vibrant greenery of early summer. The garden behind my house was blooming with roses, hydrangeas, and sweet-smelling lavender.
I sat on the back porch swing, holding a glass of iced tea, watching the afternoon sunlight filter through the oak trees.
The house had changed. The heavy security grilles were gone, replaced by open windows that let the warm summer breeze sweep through the rooms. The atmosphere of fear that had hovered over us for so long was completely erased.
The screen door opened, and Clara stepped out onto the porch. She looked radiant. Her hair was cut in a stylish shoulder-length bob, her skin glowing with health, her eyes bright and filled with life. She carried a thick sketchbook under her arm.
"How is the new foundation coming along?" I asked, smiling up at her.
"It's going amazingly," Clara said, sitting beside me on the swing. "We just secured our second shelter facility in the city. The 'Evelyn Reed Justice Center' will officially open its doors next month to provide legal aid and forensic financial tracking for domestic abuse survivors."
"You didn't have to name it after me, you know," I chuckled, taking her hand.
"Of course I did," Clara said softly, resting her head on my shoulder. "You saved my life, Mommy. You showed me that justice isn't just something in books—it's something you fight for with everything you have."
A gentle breeze rustled the leaves in the yard. In the distance, a bluebird landed on the garden fence, singing a sweet, clear song into the warm afternoon air.

The nightmare was finally over. The wounds had healed into scars, and the scars had turned into strength. Beckett Hale was locked behind stone walls, serving his time in silence, while the world he tried to destroy bloomed with new hope and purpose.
I wrapped my arm around my daughter’s shoulders, pulling her close. We sat together in the warm sunlight, looking out at the beautiful, peaceful horizon, ready for whatever tomorrow might bring.
