Chapter 6 - The Cleansing of the Estate

By sunset, the Moretti estate was quiet once again.
The federal transports had cleared the long driveway, carrying Julian and six of his co-conspirators from the security detail off to the federal detention center in Manhattan.
In the main kitchen, the heavy smell of roast chicken, garlic, and fresh herbs filled the air.
Mia was sitting at the wooden prep table, wrapped in a soft wool cardigan, sipping warm tea while Dr. Walsh checked her vitals one last time. Lily was sitting on a high stool beside her, happily coloring in a drawing book with a new set of crayons I had ordered from town.
The double doors opened, and Elena walked into the kitchen, wearing a simple cream sweater and dark jeans. Her face still bore a faint bruise along her jaw, but her eyes were clear, bright, and full of life.
When Mia saw Elena, she immediately set her teacup down and stood up, her eyes filling with nervous tears.
"Ms. Elena..." Mia whispered softly. "I... I'm so sorry... because of me, you were..."
"Don't you dare apologize, Mia," Elena interrupted gently, walking across the room and taking both of Mia’s hands into her own. "You were the real victim here. You protected your daughter, and you survived three days in the dark. You are the bravest woman in this house."
Mia let out a sob, leaning forward to hug Elena tightly. Elena wrapped her arms around the maid, stroking her hair as they held each other in the quiet warmth of the kitchen.
I stood in the doorway, leaning against the wooden frame, watching them with a deep, quiet gratitude filling my chest.
Little Lily looked up from her coloring book, saw me standing there, and hopped down from her stool. She ran across the tile floor, her tiny arms wrapping around my knees.
"Thank you for finding my mommy, Mr. Leo," Lily whispered, looking up at me with her big, innocent brown eyes.
I knelt down on one knee, gently patting her hair. "Your mommy is a hero, Lily. And no one is ever going to hurt her in this house again."
I stood up and looked at Elena. She stepped away from Mia, walking over to stand beside me.
"Where is he?" Elena asked softly.
"Julian is in federal holding," I replied, taking her hand in mine, lacing my fingers through hers. "The U.S. Attorney’s Office has enough evidence to lock him and Carmine Moretti away for fifty years without possibility of parole. The family council met two hours ago—Carmine’s faction has been completely dismantled. The turf war is over."
Elena leaned her head against my shoulder, taking a deep, long breath of peace. "It feels like a bad dream that’s finally over."
"Not completely over," I said softly.
She looked up at me, her brown eyes questioning. "What do you mean?"
I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small, dark blue velvet box.
I opened it.
Inside, sitting on a bed of white silk, was the real engagement ring—the platinum band with its flawless solitaire diamond, brought back to the estate by Sarah after she recovered Elena’s stolen personal items from Julian’s private safe.
Elena gasped softly, her hand moving to her mouth.
I took the ring from the box, looking down into her eyes with every ounce of love, devotion, and reverence in my soul.
"Elena," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "I let a snake make me doubt the woman who holds my heart. I promise you, on my life, my father's memory, and every day I have left on this earth, that I will never let anyone come between us again."
I lifted her left hand, slowly slipping the heavy platinum ring onto her finger.
I turned her hand over, showing her the inside of the band.

There, etched in delicate, perfect script, were the five Italian words: Per sempre, mia bella Elena.
Elena cried out with joy, throwing her arms around my neck, pulling my mouth down to hers in a deep, passionate, breathtaking kiss that swept away every remnant of dark memory from our home.
