Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Circle

The sunset over the Atlantic turned the sky into a canvas of violent orange, soft pink, and deep purple.

A simple wooden arbor stood on the sandy shore, wrapped in white linen and fresh wildflowers.

An elderly local justice of the peace stood under the arbor, his jacket rustling in the soft evening breeze.

I stood waiting at the edge of the water, wearing a linen shirt and dark trousers, barefoot in the cool sand. Beside me stood Jonas, who had traded his tactical suit for a navy blazer, holding a small silver box containing two simple, unadorned gold bands.

Soft violin music—played by a local musician sitting near the dunes—began to float over the sound of the ocean waves.

I turned my head, and my heart stopped all over again.

Elena was walking down the gentle wooden ramp from the house. She wore a simple, breathtaking ivory silk dress that swept over the sand, her dark hair crowned with a wreath of white jasmine.

In her arms, she carried Leo.

Our son was seven months old now—a chubby, happy baby with a mop of unruly jet-black hair, wearing a tiny white linen shirt, his big slate-blue eyes wide with wonder as he looked at the ocean.

As she reached me, I stepped forward, taking Leo into my left arm, and taking Elena’s hand in my right.

"You look breathtaking," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion.

"You don't look so bad yourself, old man," she whispered back, her hazel eyes sparkling with tears of happiness.

The justice of the peace smiled warmly at us.

"We are gathered here today," the old man began, his voice carrying clearly over the gentle crash of the surf, "not to join two strangers, but to bless a circle that was broken and forged again in the fire of devotion, strength, and life itself."

He looked at me. "Julian, do you take this woman to be your wife, to hold and to protect, in sickness and in health, for as long as you both shall live?"

I looked at Elena—at the tiny faint scar on her lip, at the deep, incredible love shining in her eyes, at the woman who had fought through death itself to bring our family into the light.

"With every breath I have," I said, sliding the simple gold band onto her finger. "With every dollar, every heartbeat, and every day left in my life. I am yours, Elena. Forever."

The justice turned to her. "Elena, do you take this man to be your husband?"

Elena reached into the silver box, taking the matching gold ring, and slid it onto my finger. Her hand was warm, steady, and completely certain.

"I take you, Julian," she said, her voice clear and strong against the ocean breeze. "Not as my protector, and not as my master... but as my partner, my love, and the father of my child. I am yours."

"By the power vested in me," the justice smiled, "I pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss your bride."

I didn't wait. I pulled her close, my arm wrapping around her waist, keeping Leo safe and warm between us as I pressed my lips to hers.

Leo let out a loud, delighted squeal, his chubby little hands reaching out and grabbing both of our faces at the same time, pulling us into a messy, laughing, collective hug.

We broke apart, laughing, tears streaming down our faces as the sun finally dipped below the horizon, bathing the coast in a warm, golden twilight.

I held my wife in one arm and my son in the other, standing firm against the edge of the rising tide.

The storm was finally over. The empire was rebuilt. And for the first time in my life, I was finally home.
