Chapter 8 - The War in the Shadows

That night, the Barrington estate was locked down under absolute war protocol.

While the rain hammered against the high glass windows of the master nursery, the bloody machinery of the Chicago syndicate moved in complete darkness.

I stayed in the nursery, sitting in a plush rocking chair near the fireplace, holding Leo.

Around 2:00 AM, the heavy oak doors opened silently.

Daniel stepped into the room. He had washed away the blood and gunpowder, dressed in a fresh charcoal silk shirt and black trousers. His wet dark hair was pushed back, his pale amber eyes carrying the cold, quiet residue of a man who had spent the last four hours executing absolute vengeance.

He didn't say a word. He walked across the room, poured a glass of water from a crystal decanter, and sat down on the leather ottoman right in front of my chair.

"It's done," Daniel said, his voice low and raspy.

I looked at him, my heart hammering quietly against my ribs. "Antonio?"

"His lieutenants surrendered at midnight," Daniel replied, taking a slow sip of water. "Antonio attempted to flee to Canada through a private airfield in Milwaukee. Marco intercepted his plane before it took off."

He set the glass down and reached out, his long, calloused fingers gently resting against Leo’s blanket.

"No one will ever threaten my son again," Daniel said softly. "The family council met three hours ago. They confirmed my full authority over the Eastern shipping routes and the Chicago territory. The war is over."

I let out a quiet, trembling breath. "And my brother?"

"He was sleeping when I checked on him twenty minutes ago," Daniel said, a faint, rare trace of amusement touching the corner of his lips. "He ate two steaks, watched three movies, and wept tears of joy when Matteo told him his debt was officially settled."

I couldn't help the small, breathless laugh that escaped my lips. "He really is an idiot."

"He's young," Daniel corrected gently, looking up from the baby to meet my eyes. "And he is lucky to have a sister who was willing to walk into a room full of armed killers to save him."

The room fell into a heavy, intimate quiet. The fire crackled softly in the hearth, casting long, golden shadows across Daniel’s sharp cheekbones and tattooed neck.

"Why did you really ask me to stay for a year, Daniel?" I asked softly, my voice barely above a whisper. "You could hire ten elite neonatal nurses. You could build a private hospital on this estate."

Daniel reached up, his warm fingers brushing against the side of my neck, his thumb tracing the soft line of my jawline. A electric shiver ran straight down my spine.

"Because ten nurses wouldn't have stripped off their gloves," Daniel murmured, his amber eyes locking onto mine with raw, unvarnished truth. "Ten nurses wouldn't have yelled at my doctors, or threatened my guards, or held a dying baby to their skin until his heart remembered how to beat."

He stepped closer, leaning his forehead gently against mine, his hot breath fanning across my lips.

"And because," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with a deep, profound hunger, "when I looked at you holding my son in that hospital room... I saw the only woman who could ever make this dark house feel like a home again."
