Chapter 6 - The Digital Siege

Marcus’s armored truck tore through the cemetery’s iron gates just as I leaped over the brick wall. I scrambled into the backseat, pulling Tessa and Miles into my arms as Marcus slammed the accelerator, the tires screeching against the asphalt as we left Pendelton’s mercenaries in a cloud of exhaust smoke.
"Did you get it?" Tessa asked, her face pale as she looked at the blood dripping from my jaw.
I pulled the silver drive from my pocket and held it up. "We have the key. Marcus, take us to the safehouse."
The safehouse was a secure warehouse located in the industrial district of Gastonia, disguised as an abandoned textile mill. Inside, Marcus had set up a military-grade satellite internet connection and a secure network server array completely insulated from local service providers.
I sat at the primary console, plugging the encryption drive into the terminal. Tessa stood over my shoulder, her fingers typing in the complex, thirty-six-character master password she had memorized for three long years.
The screen flashed red, then green.
Lines of data began to cascade down the monitor like a digital waterfall. Financial records, bank routing numbers from offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, manifests for shipping containers carrying illegal, unapproved medical drugs, and most importantly—a direct digital ledger of cash payments made to city council members, judges, and Detective Vance himself.
"It’s all here," I breathed, my eyes reflecting the blue light of the screen. "This is enough to put Arthur Pendelton away for ten consecutive life sentences."
Suddenly, the primary server monitor flickered, and a video feed overrode the data.
The screen displayed the interior of a luxury office. Sitting behind a massive mahogany desk was Arthur Pendelton himself. He looked pristine, his gray hair perfectly combed, sipping a glass of scotch as he looked directly into the camera lens.
"Hello, Tessa. Hello, Aaron," Pendelton said, his smooth, patrician voice carrying a chilling layer of absolute confidence. "You really are an incredibly resilient family. But you see, I’ve owned Vanguard Logistics for forty years. Did you truly believe I wouldn't place a digital tracking beacon inside my own master ledger encryption files? The moment you decrypted that drive, you sent a GPS ping directly to my private security team."

The video feed shifted, showing an external camera angle of our warehouse. Three black armored personnel carriers were currently pulling up to the perimeter gates.
"You have five minutes to bring me that drive," Pendelton smiled. "Or my men will ensure that this time, Tessa's funeral is completely authentic."
