Chapter 8 - The Ruin of the Mercers

The courtroom descended into absolute chaos.
Lydia Vance-Mercer stood up from her seat, her mink coat falling from her shoulders, her face contorted in hysterical rage. "You can't do this! That money is ours! That girl is nothing! She's a nobody!"
"Silence in this courtroom!" Judge Sterling slammed her gavel down with thunderous force, the wood splintering under the blow. "Bailiffs, secure that woman!"
Two bailiffs immediately stepped forward, grabbing Lydia by her arms and pushing her back into her seat.
Julian Sterling, realizing his career was about to be dragged into a toxic wasteland of federal fraud charges, hurriedly packed his papers into his briefcase. "Your Honor... my firm was entirely unaware of these fraudulent submissions by our clients. We formally withdraw our representation of Mr. Derek Mercer and Oak Haven Holdings LLC immediately."
"Granted," Judge Sterling said coldly. "And Mr. Sterling, you will remain in this courthouse to provide a formal statement to the District Attorney regarding your firm's retainer payments."
Sterling practically ran out of the well of the court, leaving Derek sitting completely alone at the petitioner's table, shaking violently, staring at his hands as if he didn't recognize them.
Judge Sterling turned her attention to Derek.
"Derek Mercer," she said, her voice cutting through the room like a steel blade. "In my twenty-five years on the bench, I have rarely witnessed a display of such calculated, grotesque, and malicious fraud against a spouse and a newborn child."
She picked up her pen, signing three separate documents with sharp, aggressive strokes.
"I am issuing the following immediate orders," Judge Sterling declared:
"First, the quitclaim deed filed on 142 Maple Street is hereby declared NULL AND VOID ab initio. Full, unencumbered legal title is restored solely to Sarah Beckett-Mercer."
"Second, the emergency protective order petition is DISMISSED WITH PREJUDICE. Full legal and physical custody of Leo Beckett-Mercer is granted exclusively to Sarah Beckett-Mercer."
"Third, a permanent, lifetime Order of Protection is issued against Derek Mercer, Lydia Vance-Mercer, and Dr. Arthur Vance, barring them from coming within two thousand feet of Sarah, Leo, or Thomas Beckett."
Judge Sterling looked over at Detective Elena Rodriguez, who was standing near the double doors with three state troopers.
"Detective Rodriguez," Judge Sterling ordered. "You may execute your arrest warrants."
Detective Rodriguez stepped forward, pulling three sets of heavy steel handcuffs from her belt.
"Derek Mercer, Lydia Vance-Mercer, and Arthur Vance," Rodriguez announced loudly. "You are under arrest for Grand Larceny, Real Estate Fraud, Falsification of Public Documents, Extortion, and Conspiracy."
The state troopers moved in.
Lydia screamed as her hands were pinned behind her back over her mink coat. Dr. Arthur Vance collapsed into his chair, weeping openly as the handcuffs clicked around his wrists.
And Derek Mercer—the arrogant parasite who had thrown his wife's life into a snowbank—was pulled out of his chair by two large troopers. As he was led past our table, his eyes caught mine.

He looked at me with a pathetic, desperate plea for mercy.
I didn't say a word. I simply stepped in front of Sarah and Leo, blocking his view, standing as an unbroken wall between the predator and his former prey, until the heavy doors of the courtroom slammed shut behind him forever.
