Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark'

The alleyway was dark, lit only by the distant amber glow of a streetlamp. The smell of damp garbage and wet asphalt hung heavy in the air. I walked slowly, my heart in my throat, terrified of what I might find—or who might be watching me.

"Robert?" I called out softly.

A shadow moved near a stack of wooden pallets. A figure stepped forward, holding a rusted iron pipe. When the dim light hit his face, the pipe dropped to the ground with a dull clang.

"Mariana," Robert whispered, his voice laced with panic. "What are you doing here? I told you to stay away. If Alejandro finds out—"

"I know, Robert," I interrupted, tears blurring my vision as I stepped closer. "I know everything."

He froze, his entire body going rigid. "What do you mean?"

"I opened the safe. I saw the agreement. I saw the forged signatures." I reached out, my hands gripping his dirty, threadbare jacket. "You didn't ruin our marriage. You didn't steal anything. You gave up your career, your reputation, your entire life... for me."

Robert closed his eyes, a single tear cutting a clean path through the dirt on his cheek. "They were going to send you to a federal penitentiary, Mariana. Alejandro had built a airtight case against you. Your own father signed the papers allowing it. They needed a fall guy to protect the family empire, and when I threatened to go to the FBI, Alejandro gave me a choice: sign the confession and disappear, or watch you spend twenty years in prison."

"Why didn't you tell me?" I sobbed, burying my face in his chest. He smelled of rain and sorrow, but underneath it, he still smelled like the man I loved.

"Because you wouldn't have let me do it," he said softly, his rough hands hesitantly coming up to wrap around my shoulders. "You would have fought them, and they would have crushed you. If you hated me, you would move on. You would stay safe with Alejandro. That was the deal."

"It wasn't a deal, Robert. It was an execution," I said, looking up into his exhausted eyes. "But it ends now. I'm not that naive girl anymore. We are going to take them down."
