Chapter 10 - The Sunlight in the Yard

That evening, as the sun dipped behind the western hills, setting the sky ablaze in brilliant strokes of purple and pink, Emily and I sat on the wooden bench at the edge of our pond.
Barnaby was fast asleep at our feet, exhausted from a full day of running, his tiny chest rising and falling in rhythm with the soft rustle of falling oak leaves.
Emily leaned her head against my arm, clutching her small sketchbook in her lap.
"Daddy?" she asked quietly, her voice peaceful.
"Yeah, baby?"
"Do you ever think about the cage?"
The question hung in the quiet evening air for a moment. I looked down at her, my heart swelling with a fierce, protective love that no storm, no killer, and no horror could ever diminish.
"Sometimes, sweetie," I admitted honestly. "Sometimes I think about it when it rains."
Emily sat up, reaching into her collar to pull out her heart-shaped silver locket. She opened it, looking at the tiny steel key resting inside, glowing softly in the twilight.
"I used to think that cage was the whole world, Daddy," she whispered, her eyes reflecting the warm pink light of the sunset. "When I was in there, under that dark tarp, I thought the sun was never coming back. I thought nobody could hear me."
She looked up into my eyes, her hand reaching out to squeeze my fingers with a strength that amazed me every single day.
"But then you came," she said, a small, radiant smile spreading across her face. "You broke the lock. You carried me out into the light."
She closed the locket with a soft, satisfying click, letting it drop back against her sweater.
"The cage is gone, Daddy," she said firmly, turning her page in the sketchbook to reveal a beautiful, detailed drawing of our new craftsman house, complete with the oak tree, the pond, Barnaby running on the lawn, and two figures standing hand-in-hand beneath a bright yellow sun. "This is our world now."

I pulled my daughter close against my side, wrapping my coat around her shoulders as the first stars of the evening began to twinkle in the clear sky above our home.
The shadows of the past had finally burned away into the quiet beauty of the night. We were safe. We were whole. And as long as I breathed, the light in her world would never go out again.
