Chapter 3 - Into the Shadows

The clock was ticking. It was 10:00 PM. In two hours, Michael would be financially paralyzed.

“We need to move,” David said, his military background taking over his tone. “Michael, if your personal accounts are frozen, you won’t even be able to pay for a hotel room for Emily and the kids. We need to withdraw as much liquid cash as possible right now, and we need to hide Emily somewhere Ashley’s investigators can’t find her.”

Michael stood up, a newfound resolve replacing his despair. “I have a private safe-deposit box at a small community bank in Savannah. It’s registered under my grandfather’s estate name, not Carter Enterprises. Ashley doesn’t know about it. There’s about two hundred thousand dollars in cash and bearer bonds inside.”

“Good,” David nodded. “We drive to Savannah tonight. Emily, pack whatever you have. We are leaving this shelter. Ashley knows you’re here; it’s no longer safe.”

Within twenty minutes, they were inside Michael’s SUV. Emily sat in the back, sitting protectively between the two car seats David had hastily secured. Michael looked at the rearview mirror, watching his son and daughter sleep. Their names, Emily had told him, were Leo and Lily. Leo had Michael’s strong chin; Lily had his bright, striking blue eyes. Looking at them, Michael felt a profound wave of protective fury. He had let these children live in poverty while he lived in a mansion built on lies.

The drive to Savannah was tense and silent. The highway was dark, illuminated only by the headlights of the SUV. Michael kept checking his mirrors, terrified that Ashley’s operatives were following them.

“Michael,” Emily’s voice came quietly from the darkness of the backseat. “What is your plan? You can’t just run forever. Ashley has your company.”

“I’m not running, Emily,” Michael said, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. “I’m going to pretend to surrender. Ashley wants the wedding. She wants the Carter name and the social status that comes with it. If I fight her openly, she uses the power of attorney to destroy me. But if I play the part of the defeated fiancé, if I walk back into that mansion and pretend I’m going through with it, I can buy us time.”

“No,” Emily said, her voice sharp with fear. “It’s too dangerous. She’s manipulative, Michael. She’ll find a way to trap you permanently.”

“It’s the only way to get the evidence we need to overturn the power of attorney,” David intervened from the passenger seat. “We need proof of fraud. We need to prove that Ashley forged Michael’s signature on those corporate documents and that she redirected the bank funds. I have a contact in cyber-forensics, but he needs access to the server inside the Carter Enterprises headquarters. Michael has to be inside the building to grant that access.”

Michael glanced at Emily in the mirror. “I have to do this, Emily. I gave up on you when things got tough. I’m not giving up now. I’m going to walk right back into the lion’s den, and I’m going to tear it down from the inside.”

They arrived in Savannah at 1:30 AM. The small community bank was closed, but Michael used his private key and biometric access to enter the 24-hour secure vault room. When he emerged twenty minutes later, he carried a heavy leather duffel bag stuffed with cash and documents.

David guided them to a safe house—a secluded, heavily fortified cabin deep in the Georgia woods, owned by a retired military friend. As Michael helped Emily carry the babies inside the warm, rustic cabin, he felt a brief moment of peace. For the first time in a year, his family was together, even if they were hiding in the shadows.

As the babies were laid down in a makeshift crib, Michael turned to leave. He had to return to the city before morning to face Ashley.

Emily stopped him at the door. She looked at him, her eyes searching his face for the man she used to love. “Be careful, Michael. She doesn’t have a conscience.”

Michael took her hand, squeezing it gently. “I lost my soul when I lost you, Emily. I’m just trying to win it back.”
