Chapter 4 - The Counter-Strike

By noon the following day, the Vance empire had already begun its media narrative.

I turned on the local news in Doc Miller’s private office. A polished spokesperson for Vance Enterprises was standing outside the county courthouse, delivering a press release. They claimed that Clara Vance (née Miller) was currently missing following a severe mental health crisis, and that an "unstable relative" had abducted her from her home.

They were trying to flip the script, turning me into the kidnapper.

"They're fast," Doc Miller noted, handing me a cup of black coffee. "They've already contacted the Sheriff's office. There's a Silver Alert out for Clara, and an active warrant for your arrest for aggravated trespass."

"Let them issue warrants," I said, opening my tactical laptop. "They think I'm playing a civilian game. They think I'm going to file a complaint at the local precinct and wait for a detective to call me back in six weeks."

I opened a encrypted communication protocol I hadn't used since my retirement. I dialed a direct extension to the State Special Investigations Bureau in Capital City—a unit independent of local county politics, reporting directly to the State Attorney General.

"Special Agent Vance," a sharp female voice answered on the second ring.

"It's Arthur Pendelton," I said.

There was a brief pause on the line. "Arthur? Good lord, I haven't heard your voice since the Hartford syndicate bust in '18. What's going on? I'm seeing an alert with your name on the state wire."

"The local Sheriff's department is dirty, Sarah," I said directly. "Richard Vance locked my daughter in an exterior guard kennel in freezing weather to force her to sign away her trust assets. He set a Cane Corso on me when I rescued her. I have full medical forensics, timestamped photos, and a toxicology report showing involuntary sedation."

Agent Vance let out a long breath. "The Vance family has deep roots in county law enforcement, Arthur. Sheriff Higgins gets sixty percent of his re-election campaign funds from Vance real estate developments. If I step in, I need bulletproof evidence that bypasses local jurisdiction."

"I have the evidence," I replied. "And I also have something else."

"What's that?"

"Richard’s father, Victor Vance, hasn't just been buying local sheriffs. I spent the last four hours digging through Clara's financial records that she backed up on my secure server last year. Vance Enterprises is using offshore shell companies to launder money through their luxury real estate acquisitions in Connecticut. Richard wasn't trying to force Clara to sign a prenup—he was trying to force her to sign off as a corporate officer on a money-laundering transfer before the federal regulators caught up with them."

Silence hung on the line for three seconds.

"Arthur," Agent Vance said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, focused tone. "Tell me you have the transaction logs."

"I have the account numbers, the routing codes, and Clara's forged digital signature," I said. "Send a tactical team to Doc Miller’s clinic in Hartford. Secure my daughter under federal witness protection. Once she's safe, you and I are going to tear the Vance empire down brick by brick."
